Not at all, Riverfront has just as many mediocre elements as The Franklin.

Agreed, something more memorable is deserving for Spadina, much more memorable than Riverfront.

They specified they were going to remake the statues, gargoyles and iron awnings! Hopefully it all works out!!
That sounds very interesting; walking/riding/driving through downtown will be so much more enjoyable if more buildings adopted similar design principles as the King George, hopefully it all works out

History challenge

Here's a challenge for any history buffs on here. The Empire Hotel stood on the corner of 20th Street and 2nd Avenue South, and included the 1200-seat Empire Theatre. Is it the same building as the current Capri Place? Or did it stand on the Impark lot on the NE corner, or the Galaxy Theatre site?

It would be nice to see the Capri redone in an "Empire revival" style. I think it would really compliment riverlanding as well.

New Broadway condo unveiled
TheStarPhoenix.com
Published: Thursday, May 15, 2008
Meridian Developments Inc. has unveiled its design plans for its mixed-use commercial-residential project at Broadway Ave. and Ninth Street.

The concept - LUXE, as it has been dubbed - appears to be firmly aimed at the higher end of the condominium market in Saskatoon.

A year ago, the company was looking at putting up a building of at least 12 storeys to take advantage of demand for condo housing in the Broadway area but have since scaled that down, partly due to construction costs going higher.

Company principals Karl Miller and Ken Achs have scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference at the site to discuss the concept plan, which involves a more substantial Broadway branch of the Affinity Credit Union.

The building sits on the site of what used to be a retail building that once housed one of the early art-deco style Safeway stores.

It's nice haha and that's where I stop, to bad they had to chop off 7 floors.

Nice, I think this will be a great addition to the Broadway area. As much as I would have liked more height, this building will fit in well with the area. Maybe they are building a secret 10 story addition inside the building to be raised near completion....

edit: I am glad they got rid of the lightening rod on top!

This is exciting! Broadway has always been my favorite area in the city. A condo in this location seems also perfect. The fact it will be built soon, makes me very happy. I was expecting another year until something would be built.

looks great!

as for the empire i am nearly 100% sure is was demo'd. it is too bad that many of our once great hotels are gone like the queens and he soon to be barry.
as for the luxe i think it will look nice but the newspaper says at least 12 but the rendering only shows 7 floors

The SP story has been updated:

New Broadway condo unveiled
Two dozen condo units will be developed, with three million-dollar penthouse units

Meridian Developments Inc. has unveiled the design plans for its mixed-use commercial-residential project at Broadway Ave. and Ninth Street.

The concept - LUXE, as it has been dubbed - is firmly aimed at the higher end of the condominium market in Saskatoon. In total, some 24 condo units will be developed, with three penthouse units likely priced at more than $1.3 million with 2,400 square feet of living space. The units that are expected to sell at a starting level of $450,000 will have 1,200 square feet of living space.

Three units, dubbed "city homes" will have huge hidden terraces, just above the main floor commercial space.
Meridian Developments Inc. has unveiled its design plans for its mixed-use commercial-residential project at Broadway Ave. and Ninth Street; the concept - LUXE, as it has been dubbed - appears to be firmly aimed at the higher end of the condominium market in Saskatoon.

Meridian partners Karl Miller and Colleen Wilson both expressed confidence that price point will not deter potential buyers looking for a unique, urban feel for their condo lifestyles. They said condos located in an active retail and entertainment district should appeal to those looking for a Manhattan kind of experience in Saskatoon.

"It's a niche in the market that is not being filled," she said. "We hope that people who have been looking for something a little bit different - hip, contemporary and very luxurious - will enjoy these varied floor plans and spacious sizes."

The street level of the mixed-use building will house a new Broadway branch of the Affinity Credit Union which will offer more services and be twice as large as the existing branch in the same block of Broadway. That space will likely be sold for redevelopment, says Ian Bank, facilities manager for Affinity.

The building sits on the site of what used to be a retail building that once housed one of the early art-deco style Safeway stores. A year ago, Meridian was working on plans for a building at least four storeys higher and backed off because construction costs are much higher for structural work the higher a building goes.

However, Miller says if they had known that house prices would rise so rapidly the company might have stuck to the original scale.

SP

That last line has to be a killer for the height enthusiasts.

IIRC...

It's not the Capri Place building.

The Empire Hotel was a victim of fire, sometime around 1910. It caught fire and had to me demolished along with the Empire Theatre. Saskatoon's performing arts scene was set back a few years/decades due to the loss of a significant venue.
