I know union people love to say that cop unions aren't real unions.
And of course they're not, in the sense that they have zero solidarity with other unions and are not members of the MFL or the Labour Council.
But they're a union. They are the certified bargaining agent for the cops, and bargain with the employer. The cops have a collective agreement that governs their employment.
They can't strike, but neither can the teachers. They're called an "association", but so is the professors' union and the admin/professional city staff.
I'd say they're a union, they're just not part of the labour movement.
