The lower building was an annex to, and the skinny tower was an enclosed fire escape to the Underwood block which burned down in 1989

Thanks for the history lesson and photos regarding the Underwood block Dizzy - great post as usual. I really wish they would have kept the fire escape tower when Union Square was built - I loved that thing.
