Wascana Park is redeveloping the old tree nursery. From their crackbook page:
We've received great interest in one of our current projects, the Arboretum Park so here's some more information on it.
Construction crews have started work on transforming Wascana Centre's old tree nursery into an Arboretum park. The project which has been included in the past two Wascana Centre Master Plans, will be built along 23rd Avenue just east of Wascana Rehabilitation Centre.
The Arboretum will include a natural habitat marsh area to mitigate water issues as well as provide new pathways for the Centre. While there will be some tree & shrub remediation, the project provides a balance between creating pathways and preserving the beautiful older trees that are pertinent for the Arboretum.
The pathways and landscaping structure are designed to reflect the geometry of the historic trees, which are on a grid silmilar to the Saskatchewan prairie.
Among the species of trees that will be found in Arboretum Park are the American Linden, Black Walnut, Bur Oak, Ohio Buckeye and Colarado Spruce. Many of the majecstic trees in the area are over 50 years old.
The majority of the funding for the project has been raised by a grant received from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program along with Wascana Centre's/Regina Food Banks DIVAS in the Park and Summer Solstice Soiree fundraising events.
Substantial completion of the project should be done by mid-late August, weather permitting.
