Churches are a business and a profit centre. They should indeed be taxed, both on property and income.

All that would do is render extinct a bunch of churches, mosques, synagogues that are more concerned with faith, altruism and service than with the bottom line. Meanwhile, the handful of, shall we say, "prosperity oriented" churches that tend to annoy people would remain in place because even with property and income taxes it would probably still be worth someone's while to operate them.
