New route to Boston part of growth strategy at Halifax airport
An official at Halifax’s Stanfield International Airport said WestJet’s newest route from Halifax to Boston is just part of significant growth taking place at the region’s largest airport.

Chief commercial officer Ian Arthur said there’s no question the new route launched on Friday will add to traffic coming through the airport.
He described WestJet as an important part of that growth, noting they “came in and provided a competitive environment on key routes and that’s really important – lowering fares, making travel more affordable for Nova Scotians.”

The company will also be adding two new direct routes out of Halifax this summer. Arthur said one will be to Winnipeg and the other to Vancouver.
WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart said they’re always looking for new opportunities. WestJet has accounted for more than 60 per cent of the increase in flights out of Nova Scotia since 2005, and 90 per cent of the growth in available seat miles out of Halifax.
As for the Boston route, Stewart said “we thought it'd be a great opportunity to provide another option for Haligonians and the people of Nova Scotia to get to Boston.”

Arthur said this new route will provide a great connection to a city that shares a long history and deep roots with Halifax. With low fares (around $180), Arthur said Haligonians could pop down to Boston just for the weekend to watch the Bruins play a game.
He said Boston and New England are also core targets for Nova Scotia tourism, so it’ll provide a great opportunity for Americans to come to Halifax.

The flights will operate daily, on WestJet Encore’s fleet of Bombardier Q400 aircraft.

The launch party Friday morning, which saw the first flight 3712 leave for Boston, had people enjoying cupcakes and clam chowder.
Arthur described the latest daily flights and the launch party as “a wonderful occasion and an exciting opportunity for the region.”
