It boggles the mind that no one thought that a growing subdivision like Maple Ridge (or Lakeridge, or Harbour Landing) might ever actually need a public school to serve it. So naturally that causes population pressure at St. Angela Merici, since it's the only school in that immediate neighbourhood. Wonder if MacNeill is similarly overcrowded.
As a matter of fact, back in 1990 there was land set aside in the plans for a school in Lakeridge, but of course that never materialized. So what happens when growth jumps? A lot more kids, but no new school to serve them, and the land has already been developed or converted to other uses. Stupid, shortsighted planning. Should have held on to that land until it was needed.
I am thinking that in the future, we should require all new developments to set aside land for schools, and to hold that land until such time as the development is fully built out. By then you'll know if a new school is actually needed or not.
Are there any elementary schools in Regina which could be considered underutilized?
