Because they've already made sure that all the needy on the planet are fed and clothed, all the shelters are empty, and all the people working at Deseret Industries and cleaning chapels have adequate wages and benefits. So since all those problems are solved, the "church" decided now would be a good time to pursue some for-profit ventures, that will, I don't doubt, not line anyone's pockets, but will instead be redistributed back to the tithe payers.
