I too lived in NYC for about 11 years and for Manhattanites there IS no place off the island. Even people that live in the suburbs or long island communities think everyone else lives in the sticks. (And trust me, Utah's civilization is much more advanced than most people living on Long Island or some cities in New Jersey.)
I too love SLC and Utah for what it is. All of my friends that have visitied have left impressed by the beauty of the area, the culture and arts community, the kindness of the people, and believe it or not--the food.
