It's more like half bush, half farmland/ranchland along Hwy 666 once you get past a km or two west of Hwy 40, actually. I should know - I've been down there before. I took my first skiing lessons at a ski hill on the the south bank of the Wapiti River just off that highway and some friends of my dad own some land near that highway too.

That's Highway 40 in the picture in the Wikipedia article, not just Hwy 666 (only a very small part of Hwy 666 is shown in the bottom to the right of the river) crossing the Wapiti River immediately south of Grande Prairie. Unlike Hwy 666, there really *is* nothing but trees all the way down to Grande Cache and its coal mine a few km further north.

Highway 40 wasn't entirely paved all the way Grande Prairie to Grande Cache until as recently as around 1996, though they got started doing so in 1982. I know there are plans to twin a section of Highway 40 up to 10-15 km southwards from Grande Prairie.
