West Valley City • An urban renewal project designed to create a downtown for West Valley will be called Fairbourne Station, city officials announced Thursday.

The development — which previously was referred to as the City Center project — is expected to be built out in the next seven to 10 years with an estimated $500 million of private investment. The name honors Joseph Fairbourne, an early pioneer who settled in the area. The project sits where he had a weigh station for farmers to measure their produce on their way to market 150 years ago.

West Valley City, now the second-largest city in Utah with a population of approximately 130,000, was incorporated in 1980. The area grew up as a suburban and farming community and never had an area considered to be a downtown.
