To be fair, the cauldron was designed by David Atkins and his Ceremonies team. The first and foremost importance was to create a cauldron design that would work within BC Place and the theatrical show. They didn't come up with the cauldron design until around late-2008/early-2009, and who knows when they decided to put the outdoor cauldron at the VCC.
They wanted to keep it a secret so they started building the outdoor cauldron in the weeks before the Games (happens for every host city).
Now...consider what they've accomplished with the cauldron before the Games began, and what has since been accomplished since the Games ended.
