This way those living in the Northern suburbs could take one train ride directly to Pattison, er uh, AT&T station for games. Also, when wire problems occur south of Fern Rock station in the city, the trains can simply divert to the subway lines. Has Septa ever thought about this before?

Not prudent or feasible.
For phyiscal reasons alone - the tunnels aren't nearly commodious enough to accommodate cars the size of the current/new Regional Rail fleet. Also there would surely be some FRA issues.
