well, depending what part of town you are talking about, Hackberry's and Mesquites are what is most common natively. My parents place (about 40 acres in the Buda area) is pretty much all mesquite and hackberry's.
What I think was so stupid about tearing those tree's down (giant live oaks) is how much money those trees are worth. They could have called in a company that would have saved the trees and then sold them for a TON of money.
the University of Texas managed to save all of their live oaks when building the new North endzone.
