OK, here's another reason why I'd fully understand it if you were skeptical about where I was coming from. If I wrote the words posted above, you'd probably expect me to say something like "the person who visited the sales ctr last night gave me a guesstimate, & I asked him (or her) what the exact number was but he couldn't tell me for sure".
