M Kass, have you checked out the new-ish book "Capitalism: A Global History" by Sven Beckert? I'm about halfway through and I highly recommend it.[/QUOTE]
I've heard that I should read it from a family member who is an avowed (and annoyingly so, at times) Marxist. Brilliant guy, but a little condescending and sometimes I don't ingest his 'required reading', just due to petulant obstinance that courses through my veins. BUT! Now that I have a second recommendation, I'll definitely get into it.
On the Lloyd front, I have lived in Eliot for 15 years and have been going to that mall since I was a tiny kid-- It is in current form a dysfunctional shell of a building- but I really admire the aforementioned 'carcass pickers' of in town that can make lemonade from lemons. We here, luckily, have a preponderance of those types in the PNW. I'm grateful for them and the vision to see outside the traditional confines of commerce as a system, set up only to maximize profit- not for experience or to engage a consumer's sense of wonder, seemingly. I don't know about razing Lloyd entirely, but I think moving back to open air and finding a way to engage foot traffic without hulking facades and giant parking structures would be a helluva start.
