Certainly not renters. According to a
2023 report, only 13% of tenants have central AC in Toronto. Many more of course have window units, etc. but those generally aren't ideal and have varying levels of effectiveness. I've lived through many hot summers in sticky, sweaty apartments and it's definitely not fun.
Now a hot, sticky summer by the lake or in a place with central AC isn't so bad.

I feel that people (myself included) tend to have goldfish style memories for weather, with the last five or so days having a disproportionally large weight on what an entire season or month “feels” like.
The first two weeks especially in BC this month we’re quite warm and above average, even on the coast. Obviously downtown Vancouver and areas directly near the sea water will feel cooler during early summer heat events (just like the lake affects in Ontario).

While not quite beach weather, the temperatures have been decent enough (just about perfect, IMO). But it's also been overcast a fair bit so just doesn't "feel" like summer. May was lovely though.
