Western Canada to Asia (China particularly) has been a bloodbath of low fares out of YVR. I'd imagine that makes it hard for Hainan to compete out of YYC, especially with less buying power in the Calgary market.
Replace “YVR” with “North America” in general and you get the picture. Also out of Australia insanely low fares all the way to Europe even (via Asia of course). The secondary Chinese carriers have wrecked yields.

If forward bookings are that poor they should just pull the plug ASAP. Perhaps after the peak Xmas period.

Will WS be ready to make the leap by then? They’re wading into ultra long haul quite cautiously, it seems.

4000 nm for CDG vs 5000 nm for PEK. Not a monumental jump.

With the Olympics off the table, I doubt either of those will back fill.

I think best we can hope for is to maintain YYC-NRT and maybe get a YYC-ICN sometime in the future if WS gets a JV with Korean. HU had good planes, but it seems using them to get to Asia and trying to transfer was a problem. Would be nice if AC converted YYC-NRT to 788 once the 763s depart the fleet and maintained winter flights but I'm not holding my breath. I could see another Chinese carrier trying to make a run for it.

BA remaining seasonal

Anyone know if BA intends to remain seasonal again this year? Looks like a permanent change.

Is there a market for more YYC-Asia... when I mean market I mean a viable, profitable market? Recent events suggest otherwise.

The jury is still out on YYC-NRT... back to year-round? Remaining seasonal? Cut altogether? Needs the right frame to make it work.

Going to be a serious struggle if WS jumps in.

AC’s YVR hub and DL’s at SEA are serious barriers to entry. Not to mention all the other Asian airlines from both cities.

AC definitely was after YYC-PEK years ago but times have changed and their strategy has definitely shifted. I highly doubt it's on the top of their routes wish list anymore.

With the WS/DL JV and any alliance with KE won’t come at the expense of SEA that’s a given.

Both want, but neither can get slots at PEK until the new airport opens.

Yes it does look that way.... not 100% familiar how BA does their scheduling but as it stands now there aren't any flights after 25 Oct 2019.

Also YYC-NRT no flights after 26 Oct 2019. There won't be any 763s in AC mainline by then anyway so something will have to give one way or another.

Oh I didn’t mean the range of the aircraft. I meant jumping into TransPac to a brand new destination, likely with its own set of unique hoops to jump through.

A333s for AC to be YUL based

Based on this article I wonder if some of the 789/788s will shift to YVR freeing up a frame for NRT (788 most logical).

I thought the 789s were going to be based in YYC. Wouldn’t they be delivered to YYC first?

I don't think anyone has said if the delivery flight is going to be from Seattle to Calgary or Toronto. Alternatively they put in a hanger somewhere else to prep it for operations. There are WestJet specific installations that have to happen once it is WestJets hands. They may even take it for a spin without passengers before putting it into service.

I think the first one will go to YYZ. The hangar here won’t be ready in time for delivery which is mid January.

Is there a chance that this is just the first revenue flight. I do believe the plane will be delivered many weeks before that. They probably will be doing crew familiarizations for a few weeks. Would think it would be coming to YYC since all the international flights will be from here

If WestJet behaves the same as Air Canada (and there is no reason to assume otherwise), then yes. When AC would get a new type in they do a lot of short domestic runs (Toronto to/from Montreal) so that all the pilots they have on that aircraft type get a certain number of take offs and landings on the aircraft before it gets shifted to its regular routes. They may also need to have a certain number of hours on it before Transport Canada gives them the OK for extended over water operation on the aircraft.

In AC's latest schedule update, one of the YOW flights is on an E90, from last year's 319. The one lone E90 flight out west I believe
