I'm glad to see it re-purposed. That's actually one of my favourite mid-century buildings!

And for sure, I agree with Urbanarchit, the adult high school is another good example.

I always felt like Rideau and King Edward had the potential to be a Yonge and Dundas or Yonge and Sheppard type of intersection. This is definitely an improvement, although it would be nice to see it eventually replaced altogether.

The operator is Katasa Developments - anyone know them? The teaser rendering is playing interestingly with the ugly building - the use of large murals (or are those digital billboards?) will definitely liven up that corner. They must, must, must reactivate the retail at grade, though.
Will Katasa manage he residence? Or will it be like The Rideau Residence and The Friel (at Rideau) Residence? .Both are leased to the university who then manages it. In any event the three of them sure bring a lot of students right on to Rideau Street.

Rockcliffe's Hart Massey home earns designation for 'national significance'

Aedan Helmer, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: October 8, 2018

A Rockcliffe Park home designed by famed architect Hart Massey has been designated a site of national significance in an announcement by Parks Canada.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna announced six new designations last week, reflecting the “rich and varied history of our country in areas related to Canadian Confederation, Indigenous history, cinema, education, and architecture.”

Built in 1959, the Hart Massey House is touted as “an iconic example of mid-20th century modernism in residential architecture in Canada, and a Canadian example of International style because of its sensitivity to its natural surroundings,” according to Parks Canada.

The son of former Gov.-Gen. Vincent Massey, Hart Massey was a renowned architect who built the home on Lansdowne Road, one of the few homes overlooking McKay Lake, for himself and his family. The family lived there past Massey’s retirement in 1970.

The two-storey home is described as a minimalist structure built from a series of modular boxes enclosed by alternating glass and opaque walls.

“Elevated on thin steel columns so it appears to float above its sloped site on McKay Lake, the house was designed to preserve the integrity of its natural environment,” the Parks Canada description reads. “Its architecture is an extension of the landscape, and its dramatic expanses of glass erase the line between indoor and outdoor space.”

The east side of the house faces the lake with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer an unobstructed view of the landscape, which includes a large willow, shrubs, flowers and perennial plants.

The home was purchased from the Massey family in 1977 by Thomas and Susan d’Aquino, who described themselves as “passionate gardeners,” and the property would garner several awards in garden competitions.

In May 2000, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada recognized the site as having been “significant in shaping our built environment.”

Parks Canada noted subsequent owners have “carefully restored and renovated the house while meticulously respecting its original concept.”

Other buildings designated a site of national significance by Parks Canada include Park House in Amherstburg, Ont., and Truro Old Normal College in Truro, N.S.

I'm told that all or part of the block of Beechwood between Loyer and St Charles has been sold and that there are plans for an eight storey rental building on the site. Is this old news? I would have thought the Arturo's restaurant building would be heritage protected.

It's a pretty big block, so it might not be affecting Arturo's (which is not provincially designated, but is likely on the City's Heritage register.)

Its the portion of the block between Quickie and Arturo’s, according to Tobi Nussbaum:

Interesting... I just learned that Claude Lauzon and his wife both died this year. They, of course, were the principals behind the Lauzon Group property holding and development crumbling disrepair company, focussed in the Byward Market. I wonder if this means that their children, who now operate the company, will start to sell or properly develop these sites?

Any reason to think the descendants won't maintain family tradition?

Morguard and an unnamed partner have purchased the Jean Edmonds Towers from Brookfield (the real estate developer) at a price of $186M. They now own (or part owner) the entire city block of Slater/Bank/Laurier/Kent.

What I didn't know is that they also purchased 41 Rue Victoria in Hull, the headquarters of Brookfield (the energy company).

OBJ suggesting we might get a new downtown office tower soon.

Surprised it hasn't happened yet with the Feds using shitty buildings as swing space to renovate even shittier buildings. I know they haven't asked for that space, but developers could step up in anticipation.

That empty lot just North of Laurier on the West side of Bank is so overdue for development. I have to think that is the next office tower we get in CBD. It can't be tall in that location but something architecturally interesting would be awesome.

Something like this:

or even like this one in Vancouver:

You may or may not be aware, Morguard has made two proposal for this one over the years. You can check out the very first post of this General Rumor Thread to see one proposal and this Urbsite link for the other;

http://urbsite.blogspot.com/2012/09/bank-and-slater-streets.html

I hope they treat the heritage buildings in a similar fashion as Grant House at 150 Elgin.

EDIT: more detailed City of Ottawa report from December 2009.

There's also that vacant lot by Slater and Metcalfe.

I know that this opinion may not be shared by everyone, but looking at the half-block between Queen and Albert at Lyon that has now been cleared, I think that spot would make for a great public square that is really lacking in the CBD. I'd rather see that than another tower in that location.
