That's a pretty simplistic thought. By that theory, schools like Harvard or Oxford must have tons of waste. I just got back from a meeting with 2 business owners doing some cool infill developments.

Also, Warehouse District is adding a painted crosswalk on Sunday at Hamilton and 8th. Kind of a big deal considering how few there are in Regina... maybe 2 others?

And I just got invited to check out the new Path Cowork space, the largest cowork space in Saskatchewan. Been meaning to get over there for awhile, just been too busy.

The Mackenzie Art Gallery announced today that they recently received an anonymous $25 million donation. They’ve also received another 6 figure donation from Lyn Goldman, a local collector. It sounds like they’re going to use some of the money for expansion of programming space and adding a cafe/bar. They’ve also hired a director of programs and commissioned a piece for the grounds from Duane Linklater. Some of the money will go towards acquisitions. They’re also contributing to an endowment that will earn them some income and help keep things stable for the future.

Good pictures, UC! I wish I could say I liked what they've done but I'm not a fan. I like the way the soundstage was added and matched. This does not.

No surprise about the railyard development being stalled. There's no demand that would translate into big private profit so why would developers be in a hurry to invest there.

I like the portions that modernize the vertical window sections, but the randomized other windows? Reminds me of a the stereotypical backwater movie hick that's missing every second tooth.

Why do architects always have to add those stupid modernist warts all over when they're renovating heritage buildings?

The buildings looked great the way they were. Just fix the structure, modernize the interiors, and leave the outside the way it was. If you need to add on to the building, do it in the back or try to match the existing style.

It's so tacky, it reminds me of a 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 McMansion with 14 different exterior styles

Basically because the general public, like yourself, believe only in historical pastiche.

The modernism you're seeing is the architecture of the day, just like the recycled classical architecture that was in style in 1911.

The idea of literally recreating the architecture of the building is completely frowned upon and even some historical preservation groups actively work against recreating the style.

We live in 2018 and we should build buildings like it. Besides, it was replacing a 60s modernist building anyway.

I don't have a problem with new buildings using a modern design. My problem is trying to mix modern design in to a historical structure, resulting in two vastly different styles in the same building, which looks stupid.

Maybe you think they should have replaced the dome of the legislature with a box with offset windows and fake wood paneling when it was remodeled a few years ago, because it's 2018 and we shouldn't match historic styles.

This. If they are replacing something, then copy. But if they need to add a wing to the Leg then I'd fully support a modern addition.

Then again, modern domes are awesome.
