I work at Evraz and i agree the Brandt basement is in pretty rough shape. Word floating around here is that plans are already made and just waiting. I hear its on the Dewdney strip

They have been talking about this for some time , the rail yards would be grand , there is so much vacant land in the core that's its scary, plus Brandt would have enough money to build this new state of the art hockey palace

I don't think there is any secret that the Pat's owners would like a new arena on the RRI lands. They will need to find a novel ways to finance it. As we know the Province is broke and the City blew its wad on New Mosaic. It will be very challenging but possible. There will just need to be links to other revenue or tax generating components of a larger development.

I don't think Brandt would have any issues with financing. With owning their own arena they would be able to get 100% of the revenue generated by the events. ie: hockey, concerts etc.

You are very naïve about whether an arena in Regina can make money - maybe it cover its operating expenses, forget about the $200 million capital cost and financing charges.

If the Katz Group could convince Edmonton to pay for half of the new rink, Brandt will be able to convince Regina to pay for at least half of there's.

That being said, the City is broke so I'd be shocked of the project goes forward in the next 10 years.

If there were real plans to put it in the RRI lands I think they would have showed up in at least one of the proposals.

There are lots of ways to get the City to "pay" for amenities. Free land and servicing is one. Tax increment financing is another. Winnipeg was going to do this in the original IGF plan with the Aspers. A big tax exemption on the tax assessment increases resulting from new related development.

It must be remembered that Semple et al building a new arena would taking something away from the city that brings in revenue. I don't see an arena in the RRI. I really hope not anyway as it would kill the potential for the area.

But yes, Brandt is actively attempting build an arena.

I assume you are not advocating demoing a brand new $20million hotel?

^Not really, but the design from a street and parking perspective in the core of a city, especially given what is being envisioned for the area leaves a lot to be desired. It could have easily been built to the street with the parking in the back, but it's so suburban it is dismal. Par for the course in the downtown really. But we do like our parking lots. Perhaps all street frontages should be parking lots.

I'm not sure where your getting the $200 million from. I don't think they're looking to build an arena any bigger than 10,000 seats. it's just not necessary. Also from a former consultant that worked with Brandt that I personally know, has mentioned to me that an arena with 10000 seats can fit on the land between 11ave and 12ave, and broad St and Rose st. which tells me they have looked at it. ( Marquart) owns most of that land.
With owning their own building, they will get 100% of all the revenue from booze, concessions and gate receipts. a project like this can get financed over many years.
pretty much most of the concerts go to Sasktel center. there is no reason to think they won't attractive t shows in a new building.

I'm guessing it would be fully-furnished suites that can be used as an "executive rental" or by insurance companies during a claims process while the claimant's residence is being repaired/rebuilt.
