It's used for regular flights. Was at YYC today.

While the AC brand and colour scheme is well known in Canada, the international market has less understanding. Seeing AC aircraft in USA airports and other international destinations promotes the brand. AC's strategy is to become a global player, especially in the USA to international markets. This means they need to increase brand awareness on a global sale.

Another factor is the USA airlines retrojet fleet is under 2% of mainline fleet. With 950 aircraft in the AA mainline fleet they can have up to 15 retrojet aircraft. AC might be able to get 4-6 aircraft tops and maintain the same retrojet fleet percentage.

Final factor is trademark ownership. AC does not own the trademark to CP Air and a few others as PWA Corp did not acquire the trademark during the purchase of the legacy airlines.

The problem is WestJet does not have it's act together yet. They probably think they will figure it out by June 5th. I don't know.

All said, when Air Canada introduces a new type they don't have their act together, it takes time for them to figure out how to make it work. The difference is Air Canada would have an existing fleet of older aircraft they could put on standby. WestJet is trying to do the same thing it just has to use an outside source "Omni" for that.

YYC April Numbers

I guess the inevitable has finally caught up to YYC.

http://www.yyc.com/en-us/media/factsfigures/passengerstatistics.aspx

Pax numbers fell 2.2% in April 2016 compared to April 2015.

Transborder got smashed, while International did very well.

Overall down 2.2% (down 27,135) to 1,198,576. YTD up 1.25%.
Domestic down 0.9% (down 7,867) to 836,559. YTD up 3.09%
Transborder down 11.8% (down 29,860) to 222,245. YTD down 7.90%
International up 8.2% (up 10,592) to 139,772. YTD up 7.72%

Still up overall for the year at least. Transborder has fallen below 3 million again for the rolling 12 month period. Most likely will stay below 3 million for the year at this rate.

This isn't all that bad. Expect May to be downright dreadful, what with the "Ft. Mac effect"...
My guess is traffic (at least) down 5-7% for May.

Agree it's not too bad at all really. Just the fact we've been dodging that little "-" sign for awhile.
I expected Transborder to continue its free fall though. Perhaps that will stabilise a bit in the summer months with all the other cuts around. Pax may be connecting in YYC more to get to the US.
Happy to see international growing healthily and I expect that to continue with Hainan, Edelweiss etc but sun destination flying will be way down this summer to offset those increases somewhat.

It would be a real treat to see a 380 fly over my house - I'm directly west of 35L - so a left turnout to go south from there would take it right over my house. ( That is when one comes around - hopefully soon )

That happened when a C5 Galaxy took off on the same runway and did a left turnout to go south - what a treat to see that from only 500 ft. below it.

Based in Victoria the last couple of flights I have booked tend to have Calgary connections. I book based on a combination of price and total travel time. This week I am connecting in Calgary going to Toronto and towards the end of the month connecting again going to Chicago.

So far with EDW's return after a couple years their loads don't appear overly great thus far as they have taken off fairly light, even using rwy 29 for a departure back to Zurich. Their first flight took off at half the rwy length even, normally I am used to seeing A330's do that when they hop over to Vancity or an empty ferry flight back to Korea.
Though with the recession it probably is understandable that not alot of people would be keen on traveling to Switzerland for a vacation. Here's hoping this venture will get some profits eventually or EDW thinks long term &continue to serve in future summers.

One might argue that the good performance of the 332 (I recall KLM hopping off 29 on a daily basis even with good loads) is such that takeoff roll length becomes a highly inaccurate way of judging route performance.

Indeed, EDW took off 29 because of the 35kt wind right down the pipe and also because it's a good performer in almost any circumstance. Think of the A332 like the B736 of the family, it's the sports car compared to the sedan B737, minivan B738, and school bus B739.

It depends on how Edelweiss has structured their business plan for the service as well. They might not have banked on having any Canadian tourists travelling onboard and instead have sold all the seats to Swiss tour agencies. At Sunwing at the beginning of the season most of our return flights are empty ferry flights for the first week or two of service and then the opposite is true at the end of the season. The flights are still extremely profitable though because the empty legs have been costed in. Edelweiss could be similar.

We are flying Edelweiss this summer to Europe. Sunday July 14 YYC-ZRH-JTR (Santorini) and then flying home from Valencia, Spain to Zurich. Cost $1400 pp including all the taxes, which is not a great price, but for the summer prime time and one connection to our exact destinations is perfect.

The seating configuration is a 2x4x2 so paid $40 extra to reserve seats on the side with 2 seats.

Can't wait to see what new flight options are created with the new International Terminal opening soon.

Yep. WS opted for the most powerful of 3 engines available for the 736. As for the A332, it is 10 tonnes lighter than the 333 but has the same engine options. Rockets.

Looks like Edelweiss is planning the same service next year as well. Schedule is obviously preliminary only.
