Highly doubtful, there are three airlines on these routes all ready: AC, AS, DL. A fourth entrant would be overkill.

YYZ is the big challenge for any WS-EK codeshare ticket. WS is terminal 3 and EK is terminal 1. Further EK has to be in terminal 1 because T3 cannot handle the A380. This will push minimum connection time to at least 1.5 hours and probably closer to 2 hours.

But then again, codeshares are cheap to implement marketing ploy.

There are a number of unique international points where WS-EK codeshares could work. LGW is a prime example, WS flies from 6 Canadian points to connect into EK's LGW-DXB flight. JFK is another example where WS-EK hookup could work, there are five other cities in USA where this would work (DFW, IAH, LAX, MCO, SFO).

Yeah. All of WS' Canada-LGW eastbound can connect onto EK16 LGW-DXB A380 service after a 3 hour layover or so, and westbounds would fly EK11 DXB-LGW. A Calgary ticket would then be:

WS001 YYC 1855 – 1049+1 LGW (76W)
EK016 LGW 1425+1 – 0025+2 DXB (380)

The return:

EK011 DXB 0250 – 0720 LGW (380)
WS002 LGW 1055 – 1355 YYC (76W)

I have never been to LGW. Do they have sterile international-international transfers? (ie. no need to clear UK customs and re-do security). And same question but for inter-terminal connections (North-South).

WS has not announced if they are flying into N or S, but if they were co-located with EK this codeshare has some potential. Anecdotally, I have spoken to many people who go out of their way and connect in SEA to fly EK to South Asia. Getting an EK flight number on 6 WS destinations ex LGW could be a back way for Emirates to get (more service) into Canada.

That said, flights are only seasonal ATM and not even daily except for YYZ, which already has EK service, so there is that.

So interesting how far removed we are from EK in Western Canada, my family in Australia could not believe that they do not fly to YYC and YVR. I tried to explain why - which led to a heated debate on the topic.

Not bad, retail's a little light, but some top notch eateries.

Local Flavours Highlight Shops and Services Experience in YYC’s New International Terminal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 25, 2015

Local Flavours Highlight Shops and Services Experience in YYC’s New International Terminal

(Calgary, AB) – International and U.S.-destined passengers using the new International Terminal at Calgary International Airport (YYC) will be able to enjoy the best of Calgary, and some distinctive regional, national and global shops and services, in a unique environment.

The Calgary Airport Authority announced today that travellers will have access to more than 50 additional shopping and dining locations, with an array of trusted brands and premier service offerings in the airport’s new International Terminal, opening in late 2016. The new facility will feature flagship restaurants, as well as a great selection of local eateries, allowing passengers from all over the world the opportunity to experience the flavours of Calgary. Eighty-five per cent of the new shops and services will be located post-security, a much higher percentage than the current mix at Calgary International Airport.

“We are excited about expanding YYC’s first-rate shopping and restaurant program; these additions, along with leading-edge technologies offered in the International Terminal will offer passengers a completely new and enhanced experience,” said Stephan Poirier, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for The Calgary Airport Authority. “As an international hub, we are focused on finding the right variety of services to meet the needs of our diverse passenger mix, and it’s great to be able to give them exposure to a blend of local and international shopping options and flavours.”

Calgary-based local eateries in the new Terminal will include: Hana Sushi, a 4th Street favourite from the heart of Calgary’s Mission neighborhood; Green Chili, a Calgary-based chain serving traditional and original Indian cuisine; Vin Room, named by Where Magazine as a Top Restaurant in the ‘Best for Wine Category 2014’; and Spolumbo’s, a renowned Calgary-based Italian deli.

YYC will also welcome Wolfgang Puck, with its first restaurant location in Calgary and only its second Canadian location. In addition, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, the international chain will be opening its first airport location, while Stella on the Bow will bring a fresh new restaurant concept to YYC.

The new International Terminal will also feature a mix of established YYC shopping concepts, as well as some new retailers.

There will be two new large locations for Duty Free, operated by one of the world’s leading travel retailers, in the new International Terminal, each offering more than 5,000 square feet of shopping for premium items including liquor, cosmetics, fragrances, fashion, electronics and imported sweets.

New international and regional operators of note include a Desigual fashion boutique, Lammle’s Western Wear & Tack, Metalsmith’s Sterling fine jewelry, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which will all complement existing YYC favourites When the new facility opens in 2016, passengers at Calgary International Airport will be able to enjoy more than 175 shops and services between the existing and new facilities.

All international customers clear customs and security at LGW before onward connections, the only exception is domestic. Also no Schengen zone for UK as they are not part of the treaty.

In all likelihood WS will be gated at South Terminal. Beginning in Autumn 2016 a large airline terminal realignment occurs; leading the way is Easyjet with a consolidation in the North Terminal. BA moves to South terminal along with Virgin Atlantic. EK has to stay in North terminal because only one A380 capable gate. Most airlines will locate to the South.

From a spotters perspective, I'm looking forward to seeing some Omni tails! Any idea how long this lasts? And is it a wet-lease or are they using WestJet 767 crews?
WS would have to notify each affected passenger because the operating airline has changed. Under airline marketing regulations, both the marketing airline and operating airline must be displayed on all ticket purchases.

That said, the notification has to go to the person or company that purchased the ticket. If a Travel Agent is used, the airline must inform the travel agent and the agent informs the passenger. Its the inclusion of the travel agent that can cause things to go awry. Specifically, there will be many YYC and YEG based travel agents that have a huge task of notifying their customers regarding the operating airline change to Omni Air. The agents time notifying customers takes away from selling vacation packages to new customers and depresses commissions. Sometimes things get missed and the passenger is not notified until check in.

For airlines like Air Canada and most of the US airlines I have generally found if you book well in advance you get silly e-mail notices saying your reservation has changes, please find attached the new one. The changes are minor shifts in arrival and departure time by a few minutes or swapping A319 for A320 of it goes to a regional changing the regional. If it is a regional they are about swapping Skywest for some other regional and vice versa. What is annoying is some of these changes are material and important and other are a wait of time even knowing about.

I would toss the operator of the aircraft into that category of irrelevant. It is a minnor detail if WestJet is operating or it has a sub contractor flying the flight.

I like how WestJet's existing procedures turn it in tighter than the new proposals. In any event... good news to get more aircraft on board.

The RNP approach to runway 20 at YEG makes a gigantic difference in terms of noise abatement as arrivals from the south/east turn onto final before they reach the city. Just looking at the maps it's hard to tell exactly what impact this will have on noise for Calgary. Like anybody under the south downwind for 29 - it could potentially be louder for them as the planes could be lower to turn in sooner.

Hoping to see second WS 767 (Tail 670) enter service on Dec. 4th. As it enters the rotation I assume one will Ron in YYZ and the other in YYC. Maybe once the 3rd aircraft arrives YEG will be added to the mix.

My guess is that WS will not send the 767 until the crew is ready which could be quite a while, as ATS at YEG still have only a can loader and no supplementary equipment. Presumably Swissport will be handling Omni once Maui starts in less than a fortnight, unless the ball starts rolling very quickly here. ATS has been swamped and unable to reach full staffing all summer really, but especially since picking up DL from Swissport.

Time to eat my words, got an email from Transat today for a flight in January saying my operating airline has changed from Enerjet to Canadian North and...I AM PUMPED!! First time flying on a 733 (that I can remember)

So I guess it is nice when they notify pax about changes!

^Wow Canadian North to Cancun? Things have changed a lot in this new Alberta economy. I guess the spotters at CUN will have a new tail to look at. Has Canadian North ever flown to Cancun?

Not sure, but according to Wikipedia and GCM, we may have a problem here with range.. Would they have to make a fuel stop or use of the combi frames?

For reference the longest scheduled 733 flight (also operated by Canadian North) is 4h26m (Deer Lake to Winnipeg). CUN-YYC is ~6h.

Looks like my trip just got more interesting!

Other sources list 737-300 range as 2,950 nm... which means YYC-CUN is within reach at 2,200 nm. 5:12 flight time at Mach .74 in still air.

Great if it can work, but the separation requirements aren't there 100% yet to do this on two parallel runways simultaneously (RNAV Y vs RNAV Y) compared to combinations of ILS & Visual approaches. We well since there are many planes arriving at once, not everyone can get these approaches with a fixed flight path and fixed flight miles.

I think it's coming that our Automated system will calculate that AC123 can increase speed by 1 knot over Manitoba and be perfectly sequenced for the runway vs another arrival from YMM and the spacing be precise with CDA approaches and optimal fuel burn. There are many variables but I think it's going to go that way.

Interesting that we are just beginning to see a downturn in passengers more than a year after oil collapsed. I saw a similar story today in residential real estate numbers- after a year of relative stability, single family home prices are down 7% y/y in November.
