I really love the proportions on the 789, looking forward to seeing it here in YYC.

The bolded part is near outright missrepresentation. KL flies the 787 with 9 across seats that are half inch narrower than comparable seats on the Airbus. While AC is also 9 across, AC has true premium economy product that is 7 across. KL economy comfort has more legroom but nothing interms of altered seat design.

I tried the AC PE and Economy seats on the 787. The Economy seats are too narrow for my tastes. I will avoid the 787 economy for as long a possible. When the day comes that I nolonger can avoid the 787; I will purchase PE seats. This is not possible on KL.

Understandable. apologies if my response to your post was perceived as negative to you.

I follow airlines and aviation events out of YYC and Canada because I am frequent flyer/customer. So while others are excited about new sexy metal coming to YYC, I am more concerned about comfort inside the tube rather than looks on outside of the tube.

AS an aside, 5 years ago I was at Everett Boeing plant and looking at the mock up of the 787 Dreamliner cabin. I noticed then that 3x3x3 seating configuration was very narrow, too narrow for my tastes. The line from Boeing was that its the airlines who chose the seats, not the manufacturer. However it was clear then and its clear now that Boeing got the efficiency boos for the 787 by cramming in seats nine across instead of 8.

After sampling the AC 789 and 77HD product and UA economy product, so long as UA continues with 9 across in economy on the 777, I will continue to support UA and Mileage Plus Gold Status. I figure I got about two years before UA converts to 10 across on the 777.

^Agreed. Obviously i envy you guys down there for the variety of aircraft and choices you have but i wouldn't be thrilled with having all 787 international service. I haven't had the luxury or horror of flying the aircraft in Economy but there are so many complaints about the 3-3-3 seating that i will try and avoid it. I have always thought the 767 and 330 were top notch aircraft to fly on.

I was on United 787-9 E+ Bulk head MEL - LAX earlier this year. Luckily we had empty seat in between and because of that it was great, but I saw the back of the regular Y class seats and its cramped. That way 2 x 4 x 2 and 2 x 3 x 2 are the best long haul seating in 330/767 for cattle class.

The Airbus seats (both widebody and narrowbody) are 18.1 inches wide. The Boeing narrowbody seats as well as 767 seats are 17.5 inches wide. The 777 at 9 across are 18.1 inches wide but 17.3 inches wide if 10 across. The 787 at 8 across are 18.1 and 17.2 inches wide if 9 across. Airbus does not certify their aircraft for seats narrower than 18 inches.

Also the AC 777 premium economy seats are 20 inches wide while the 787 PE seat is 19 inches wide. This makes the 787 PE seat the narrowest PE seat in the fleet.

Cuts North and South

NORTH

Yukon's Air North has updated their summer 2016 schedule and have reduced the YYC/YEG route to three weekly only. This is a 50% reduction from summer 2015. Flights are sched to operate Mon, Wed and Fri only. Perhaps following a trend of reducing capacity to the North along with Canadian North and First Air.

Northern Air Charter to Peace River has already altered their new Whitecourt flights. These four weekly flights will now continue on to Peace River. This has then reduced the nonstop flights to Peace River to only four weekly with the other four stopping in Whitecourt. That's about as sexy as Cranbrook huh?

SOUTH

Sunwing has put on the brakes and shifted into reverse when it comes to flying next summer. Their experiment to flood the leisure market must have failed.
Not particularly surprising.
Summer 2016 summer flights to YVR, YYC and YEG are being cut.
YYC is being reduced from 8 weekly to only 3. CUN, MBJ and VRA.
YEG is being reduced from 7 to 4. CUN, PVR, MBJ and VRA.
YVR from 5 to 4. CUN, SJD, PVR and VRA.

Obviously it's still early and all of this could be subject to change.

AA MD83s to DFW and AA/UA/DL/AS cuts

Effective 17 December - 10 February AA will be placing the MD83s on the YYC-DFW route.

This route will now operate only once daily from 5 January until 2 June. The second daily will resume on the 3rd of June. And to add insult to injury his week they down gauged the remaining one daily PHX to a 319 for the entire winter.

Looks like UA is continuing to chop some YYC frequencies as well and reducing mainline flying this winter. IAH, ORD, SFO and DEN all see reductions in capacity and/or frequencies. UA has right-sized some of the IAH flights down to the smaller 737-700 as the afternoon flight on the 739s were just flying out empty. DL and AS will also be flying fewer flights this winter.

At least WS and AC will be up.

I can confirm that WestJet's 767 will not be operating to Hawaii as originally scheduled. I was planning to try the direct flight in mid-December, but they've switched the plane to a 767 operated by "Omni Air". If anyone else has booked on these flights, check your ticket. WestJet gave me no notice of the aircraft swap, I just happened to notice the change on their website. Also, if you paid extra for Plus seats, be warned that Omni's fleet is 100% economy seating.

I cancelled my ticket.

lol WestJet. From a non-avgeek perspective - definitely going to book an expensive vacation with ya when it says "subject to gov't approval" two weeks out from departure.

Not sure they would have to notify booked passengers. Typically this only happens if the flight times have changed, tail swaps can happen at any time for any reason. Plus fare pax should be offered to change their ticket to econo/flex and have a refund of the difference, but other than that no notification is required.

From a spotters perspective, I'm looking forward to seeing some Omni tails! Any idea how long this lasts? And is it a wet-lease or are they using WestJet 767 crews?

WestJet and Omni Air approval for 767 flights marketted by WestJet and operated by Omni Air.

Quote:
November 24, 2015
APPLICATION by WestJet, on behalf of itself and Omni Air International, Inc. also carrying on business as Omni Air Express (Omni Air), pursuant to section 60 of the Canada Transportation Act, S.C., 1996, c. 10, as amended, and section 8.2 of the Air Transportation Regulations, SOR/88-58, as amended.
Case Number:
15-05275
APPLICATION
WestJet, on behalf of itself and Omni Air, has applied to the Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) for an approval to permit WestJet to provide its scheduled international service between Canada and the United States of America using two aircraft with flight crew provided by Omni Air, beginning on December 11, 2015 to January 9, 2016.
WestJet has also requested an exemption from the application of subsection 8.2(2) of the Air Transportation Regulations (ATR), which requires the filing of an application for an approval at least 45 days before the first planned flight. The Agency finds that compliance with subsection 8.2(2) of the ATR is impractical in this case. Accordingly, the Agency, pursuant to paragraph 80(1)(c) of the Canada Transportation Act (CTA), exempts WestJet from the application of subsection 8.2(2) of the ATR.
WestJet is licensed to operate a scheduled international service in accordance with the Air Transport Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States of America signed on March 12, 2007.
POLICY
When assessing wet-lease applications where Canadian carriers propose to enter into wet-lease arrangements of more than 30 days with foreign carriers to provide international passenger services, the Agency must apply a direction issued by the Minister of Transport on June 24, 2014 entitled Ministerial Direction for International Service – Canada's Policy for Wet-Leasing (2014 Wet-Lease Policy).
The current application is for approval for a period of 29 days, therefore the 2014 Wet-Lease Policy does not apply.
The Agency has considered the application and the material in support and is satisfied that it meets the remaining requirements of section 8.2 of the ATR.
Accordingly, the Agency, pursuant to paragraph 60(1)(b) of the CTA and section 8.2 of the ATR, approves the use by WestJet of aircraft with flight crew provided by Omni Air, and the provision by Omni Air of such aircraft and flight crew to WestJet, to permit WestJet to provide its scheduled international service on licensed routes between Canada and the United States of America using two aircraft and flight crew provided by Omni Air, beginning on December 11, 2015 to January 9, 2016.
These approvals are subject to the following conditions:
WestJet shall continue to hold the valid licence authority.
Commercial control of the flights shall be maintained by WestJet. Omni Air shall maintain operational control of the flights and shall receive payment based on the rental of aircraft and crew and not on the basis of the volume of traffic carried or other revenue-sharing formula.
WestJet and Omni Air shall continue to comply with the insurance requirements set out in subsections 8.2(4), 8.2(5) and 8.2(6) of the ATR.
WestJet shall continue to comply with the public disclosure requirements set out in section 8.5 of the ATR.
WestJet and Omni Air shall advise the Agency in advance of any changes to the information provided in support of the application.

Not sure it's as simple as a tail swap, the flight number changed and obviously the operator of the flight changed. Even if it's not required, common courtesy would suggest they inform passengers, especially when the level of service won't match what was sold. "Plus" fares paid extra for a business-class style seat and they won't get that.

I got Rouged last year, which was miserable, but at least Air Canada had the courtesy to inform everyone well in advance.

Could this mean a new entrant on the YYC/YEG/YVR - SEA route? (I'm talking Encore of course!)
