There are now two active proposals to build new airports in Rocky View. Both parties own the land they would build on.

One is pretty modest, similar in scope to Parkland Airport which was built by the refugees left with nowhere to go when YXD closed. The other is huge with potentially two runways (and room to extend one of the runways to 8000 feet) and a passenger terminal intended for fly-in/fly-out or possibly a low-cost carrier.

I have seen a site plan for the larger of the proposals.

Calgary and Edmonton also have the interest of a Texas based developer who has built several private airfields for corporate aviation.

Very promising if this leads to AC 788 service here soon.
I bet they are moving it to a truly seasonal operation (ie operating summer scheds only - April - October).

Last winter, despite AC dropping YEG-LHR in January, YYC-LHR was still a 763 throughout the winter. So this winter doesn't appear to be any different.

Air North Changes... And a few others

Air North has adjusted their summer scheds and are now all over the shop.

Departures scattered between 1310 and 1940. Also, looks like they are scaling back to 5 per week with no flights on Tuesdays. And Wednesdays they reverse the triangle by going YXY-YEG-YYC-YXY vs the normal YXY-YYC-YEG-YXY.

Other minor updates:

Northern Air is adding a couple of flights per week to their schedule to YPE so now 7 weekly flights.

CMA appears to be quietly dropping YYC-YXS direct flights as last scheduled flight appears to be 27 June. Perhaps a victim of Westjet launching this route due to start in a few weeks.

United looks like it is scaling back YYC-IAH to only 3 daily for the summer scheds. The 4th daily comes back for the fall scheds though.

Sorry... slow news week again

The airport expansion is amazing. That's all. Saw it from the air canada departure wing on Monday.

I know that zoning can't stop the runway itself, but do you know whether they are able to build associated buildings without a permit? Not that I expect Rocky View to push back against a potential tax source, unless the approach is over a mid density acreage development.

The fourth daily UA flight is the 8:30am departure from YYC. There is a corresponding 8:40am departu0re on AC Express.

Also the 4th daily UA departure was removed last year during the summer.

Long gone however was the morning mainline UA departure to SFO.

Was it? I recall the 4th daily operated all summer last year.

And, as we all know, UA flip flops their scheds so often. I wouldn't be surprised if the July/Aug summer scheds aren't finalised yet. Last year the SFO mainline was added in April for the July-Sept flights.

They seem to work on a two-month out change.

By June 2013 the 8:30am UA mainline departure to IAH was not operating. I know as my flight to DEN went mechanical and neither myself nor other pax could get protected onto the IAH flight.

Perhaps that wasn't daily as during the June-Aug 2013 there were 26 YYC-IAH flights per week on UA. In any event, you cannot get protected on a flight that doesn't exist!

The 4th daily was a new flight added in Feb 2013.

The supreme court ruling considers an "airfield" to be the runway and associated facilities. But I don't think it would come to that.

On the site plan for the larger of the two projects the section numbers have been blurred, but I think I know where it is and I don't think anyone is likely to care.

The smaller could go just about anywhere.

Then there is the Rockyview Motorsports Park aka Calgary Aviation Land Corporation. Although I don't know anyone who took them too seriously.

Slight delay in BA 787

BA is delaying the launch of the 787 on the YYC-LHR route to the 15th of July instead of the 5th. So a little bit longer til the Dreamliner arrives... at least it's coming!

Thanks Johnny, funny enough yesterday I just sent a meeting request to my wife indicating that on July 5th I'd be out at the airport to watch the first flight come in. So now I have to update that.

Yikes...

http://avherald.com/h?article=47252452&opt=1

Quote:
An Air Georgian Beech 1900D registration C-GWGA (flight data unknown) was taxiing for departure from runway 29 and after requesting taxi clearance from apron to holding point runway 29 had been cleared to taxi from apron 5 via taxiway N and runway 26, hold short of taxiway Y. The crew acknowledged correctly. About 4 minutes and 50 seconds later, at 00:23L (06:23Z), the crew called they had committed a taxi error and were on the threshold of runway 35L.

A Westjet Boeing 737-700, registration C-GWSP performing flight WS-2312 from Calgary,AB (Canada) to Cancun (Mexico), had been cleared for takeoff from runway 17R about 2 minutes 50 seconds prior to the Beech crew's error report and had already commenced takeoff.
Looks like the TSB is coming to investigate this one.

Nick and cyeg66, isn't this something the surface radar (ASDR I think it is) could have picked up and sounded an alarm? Can't quite remember how that system works. Also given the circumstances that TSB is coming I completely understand if you can't talk about this.

Pilots with Handguns at YYC

Here is the link to the article in Calgary Herald:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/calgar...oaded+handgun+Calgary/9692661/story.html

Quote:
An American pilot was charged with multiple weapons-related offences after screening officers at the Calgary International Airport discovered a loaded handgun in a piece of luggage.

The bag was passing through the X-ray machine at the U.S. security checkpoint about 7:30 a.m. Friday when officers with the Canadian Airport Transport Security Authority saw what they believed was a firearm, said CATSA spokesman Mathieu Larocque.
Charges against the Pilot from Utah:
- Firearms Act: Unlawful storage, handling and transport of a firearm. Unauthorized possession of weapon. Possession of a prohibited weapon.
- Customs Act: Failure to declare a prohibited weapon. Smuggling, Importation of a prohibited firearm.

Pilot released on 4k bond and promise to appear in court April 29th.

Note in the USA pilots can carry a handgun if they have proper training from the federal air marshal service. Their ability to carry firearm does not extend to international flights.

I still don't even understand this. 26 short of Y, how on Earth do you end up threshold 35L in that situation.

Although I thought the tower instructions did sound a little confusing, I'm also baffled of how they went in the wrong direction for so long. Isn't Yankee the angled taxiway that goes by the Esso Avitat area and eventually leads straight to the holding area of 35? I can see how they must of gotten to the threshold as that route is quite direct from their original intended path..
Ah well, least it isn't making the news tonight...Or is it?

The taxi instructions were correct. Yankee is parallel to Charlie. It started all wrong when they took Mike (the angled one NE-->SW) instead of November. Mistakes were made, we'll see who's most to blame. I'm not sure all parties involved can be absolved.

Hey cyeg... arrivals on 11 in south flow once the parallel opens? Only when VFR? Or not even necessary?

As per the TSB twitter feed, they came to YYC to investigate. The ASDE is only an aid for our primary job of looking out the window and does not alarm if an aircraft goes on a wrong route or goes onto a runway without clearance.

From Acey's question: When we are on the parallels, we are on the parallels only until we require 29 and 26 for operational purposes (crosswind above 25 knots). We are going to use Rwy 11/29 extensively for taxiing aircraft.

^ Fair enough. I suppose an easterly wind such that 11 is the only active is rare enough that it's not really a consideration.
