I was driving by the Westgate when it was under construction, either in the fall of '66 or winter/spring of '67, when a worker fell off and was killed. It was a sickening & sad event event.

My great grandfather worked on Mansfield Dam. He was a tool manager. A worker there fell while they were pouring concrete, and he was buried alive in it. They never retrieved the man's body, so he's still in there somewhere. They stopped work that day and sent everyone home which is really unusual for any construction project.

That's interesting that it actually gave a time table for Waller Center's ground breaking - "mid to late 2014."

And that gives a 44-story floor number for the Block 52 tower at the post office.

WOW... so on top of all the buildings that have broken ground and are in progress - these are likely to break ground over the next year *crazy change:

64/40/18 stories - waller center
50 stories - fairmont
44 stories - post office
38 stories - green
30+ - travis county court house) (we know this is about 17 floors of office space but it will need at least 10 floors of parking)
30 seaholm
27 - whole foods
24 zaza

The next several years will be fun. This city is going to completely overhaul....

Looking forward to seeing a skyline where Spring is only the 10th tallest structure in town.

The gap between One Congress Plaza completed in 1987 and the completion of Frost Bank Tower in 2004 is striking - 17 years. By contrast the end of this cycle the tallest 15 buildings or so will all be less than 17 years old - my how things have changed.

We're kicking so much butt. I was looking at my list the other day and realized that 300 West Sixth was our 4th tallest when it was built in 2002. Today it is our 16th tallest (counting what's under construction) with at least 12 more that are planned that will be taller. So that building could go from being our 4th tallest in 2002 to our 28th tallest by 2017 or so. And that's assuming nothing else is planned between now and then and doesn't break ground.

Now throw in the rumored 50 story at 5th and brazos....

If Chinese investors ever discover the market dynamics here we would see three fold development. They invest billions in places like Miami with much weaker dynamics.

Sneak peek: Zilliant's brilliant new office space

Jan Buchholz
Staff Writer-
Austin Business Journal

Zilliant Inc. engaged architectural firm Gensler Inc. to come up with some brilliant design ideas for its new space in the Perry Brooks Tower, 720 Brazos St. in downtown Austin.

Clearly, it was a challenge. A good part of the 24,200 square feet that the software developer leased for its 80-plus employees was a dark, gray, vacant garage with prominent rows of concrete pillars.

Apartment investors will have the opportunity to purchase one of Austin’s newest multifamily communities with the announcement Wednesday that the Whitley at 301 Brazos St. is for sale.

The 16-story downtown project opened in April and is 68 percent leased at prices that are among the highest in the city, in some cases exceeding $3 per square foot.

A New York Times piece about the hotel market in Austin.

Austin, Tex., Stands Out in Hotel Recovery That Has Hugged Coasts

By KRISTINA SHEVORY
Published: October 1, 2013

AUSTIN, Tex. — Skittish developers have delayed new hotels across much of the country until the economy returns to health, and financing does, too. But in Austin, developers aren’t that wary.

A $300 million JW Marriott hotel, the biggest JW Marriott in the country and the city’s biggest hotel at 1.2 million square feet, is under construction on a full block near the Capitol. Developers broke ground on a Westin over the summer and a $350 million Fairmont will be going up a few blocks away.

Eight hotels containing almost 4,000 rooms are scheduled to open across Austin within the next three years, making the Texas capital one of the most active markets in the country for new hotel construction.

Where do all the hotel construction crews stay? Do they temporarily increase the shortage of hotel rooms, thus making the market look more attractive?

I think there would be a fun sense of fronterism if they had worker's camps on site they had to stay in.

I met two guys who are sheet rocking inside the JW Marriot. They are from Oklahoma and are renting an apartment in LaFontera. They expect to be working at the JW for another year and a half and this was the cheapest lodging option for them. They are paying their own way basically. Another guy who I met in that group is a contractor at a different project and the 3 months he will be here will be spent at an extended stay hotel in Round Rock. So here's 3 construction crew members who work on projects downtown and chose to live 20 miles to the north while on the job. I imagine they aren't the only ones...I didn't think to ask at the time...

As Antone's searches for home, its old club space on Fifth St. appears as option

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer-
Austin Business Journal

Now it appears two Antone’s are up in the air. Sort of.

Last Thursday morning the owners of Infest – the underground rock and hip-hop club in the building at Fifth and Lavaca streets that housed the Antone’s blues club until last spring – found themselves locked out of the property over failure to pay rent.

Now that the dust has started to settle, there are lots of question marks hanging over the high-profile venue space.
