No, I think people in this forum are not picky enough.

The only thing we should be strict about is the ban on stucco.

Okay, but a 400 foot stucco building? That would be awesome, right???

At first glance I thought that someone cropped the new courthouse and placed it in the PAC site... It's not horrible..but the good thing is it will really fill in the gap that was left after the key bank building was knocked down. Can someone crop the building into that angle? The Angle that is most used that shows a gap between 99 west. I'd show an example, but I have no idea how to post pictures on this site..

From that view I'm guessing 111 South would go right behind the Richards Court Buildings. That would be a great infil between 99 West and Gateway Tower West.

Not a fan of the design, it lacks imagination. Our skyline looks my kitchen table with a bunch of cereal boxes on it.

Yeah! It would help greatly! I was kind of sad when I found out that the Key Bank tower was going to be demolished because I knew it would leave a gap in our skyline. Glad it will be filled again!

I would prefer building with a better design built in 15 years given the two options, but it shouldn't take that long to make it look decent.

I just don't get what's to like about this design. I don't think you can actually call it a design. It's just the repetition of a single design element.

So what is the history of the building that 111 is replacing? I know it is not much to look at but how old is the building? I've only lived in Utah for about 20 years and I remember Old Navy being in that location for what seemed like about 2 months. It seems to me that that building perhaps was a 1990s refurb of an older building? Or was it new construction only to be torn down a couple of decades later?

According to a Deseret News article from Dec. 29, 2000, the history of the building is as follows:

"Montgomery Ward once operated a store in Salt Lake City on the southeast corner of 100 South and Main that closed in 1960. The building later became offices for the Genealogical Society of the LDS Church, then the headquarters of Tracy-Collins Bank & Trust, which later became West One Bank, then U.S. Bank. The building now is home to the Old Navy clothing store."

I am not sure how often the building has been refurbished. I think it's gorgeous and I wish the building to the East of it on 100 South across Regent Street was being demolished instead. It currently houses Bennion Jewelers. I wonder what will become of them.

Wait... Isn't 111 the upac tower???... That is the Bennion Jewelers building in that location

Perhaps Old Navy has offices in the building.. The store in the base is "Bennion Jewelers" though

As I stated in an earlier post, there is work being done for the new building across from the new courthouse at approximately 375 South and West Temple.

Pictures to follow:

Go back and read what he said, Old Navy was in there "for what seemed like about two months." Before it was a jewelry store, there was an Old Navy there at one time, this being over a decade ago. I always associated the building with Old Navy as well.

1) I would say a lot of buildings are just a repetition of a single design element, the ones that aren't are Gehry.

2) With the accordion windows as they are being described, sunlight will catch on different levels at different times, thus creating a facade that highlights different levels at different times during the day making the building change, even if just slightly, depending on the time of day as well as how overcast it is.

Thanks for the welcomes and the image. I was hoping I'd be able to see the ESA hotels from my apartment on 300 S (so, it'd have to be taller than the lofts/offices on 200 S), but I guess that probably isn't going to happen.

Welcome to the forum, jimmycdii!

I can't remember if I've seen a rendering of the hotels, but I'm sure they are of typical mid-rise flair, so, nothing special, and probably very similar to the Hyatt house built out in Sandy:
