It turned out so much better than I was expecting when it was under construction. It's a bit grey for me, but I'm glad it uses quite a bit of brick. I wish there was more brick used in SEFC to give it a bit more of an industrial character.

Salt Building To Become New Brew Pub for Mark James

... once the Paralympic Games are over, its transformation will continue into 2011, at which time it will house a restaurant, brewpub, coffee shop and bakery under the management of the Mark James Group (owners of the Yaletown Brew Pub, among other properties).

The Salt Building is currently undergoing one more transformation through the integration of a restaurant, brew pub, coffee house and bakery within the historic structure. The legacy vision will realize the creation of a unique focal point for residents to gather for social interaction.

Pre-dating even those is a) the Challenge Series, published in 2008 IIRC which is b) based off of plans solidified in 2006, which c) were developed from musings, council meetings, committees, public consultation, etc. in 2004!

Out of curiosity, did you note the progress of the (former) Playhouse theatre and office space in the middle of Wall Centre False Creek?
I took these a few weeks ago and forgot to post them:

^ Thank you very much for these! Looks good so far. I like how the crenellated glass wall appears to be shaping up.

I walk by there every day and I am just amazed at the speed that project and ones on quebec and main are coming along. It is also neat to see the terra breads full of construction workers and yuppies. Not a common combination.

structural glass and spider connections! Seems like southeast false creek is using better materials than projects on the downtown peninsula

The last of 3 WCFC construction cranes came down yesterday!

Don't worry... soon enough we'll see a new crane for The One, though a little digging is required first.

Great update, Jimbo.

The One park may just be the saddest in all of Metro Vancouver.

Why do all the buildings look like they dropped the same 2-storey glass box on top of it, Vancouver-special mohawk style:

Everything from the proportions, the unprecedented level of fussiness, right down to the mentally-deficient attempts at "colour", are conspiring to make my eyes bleed.

Vancouver could take come cues from Richmond's no-name Chinese developers on how to do clean designs on half the budget:

^ I agree. There are some really nice mid-rises going up in Richmond right now.

I wonder how Foundry managed to avoid the SEFC requirement for green roofs?

In other news, Google maps now has 45 degree views for Vancouver! Just zoom in an it will switch to the 45 degree view - the content of which is much newer than the ancient satellite map for Vancouver. Last summer approximately for the 45 versus several years for the satellite map.

And the street view has been updated with more recent as well! Yay!

Another "OMG dead people are bad for property values" case, as condo dwellers in SEFC try to stop Kearney Funeral Home from moving into the heritage building at Cambie and 2nd:

...Albert Chang, who lives in the new Maynard’s building across the street, said no one knew a funeral home might be coming in.

“People have put a lot of money into their property,” he said, adding property taxes in the neighbourhood have almost doubled in the last four years. “The whole area is becoming more expensive.

“A funeral home can be any place. It does not have to be here...”
