Saskatoon Heritage?

Hey everybody. I was just having a stroll around a bunch of heritage buildings in Saskatoon as a part of the Doors Open event. Unfortunately, in the Avenue Building I saw something that shocked me. The basement of the Avenue building once contained the largest dance hall in Western Canada, complete with an understreet passage to the train station (this is why there are glass slots in the sidewalk on 21st street - to let light into the passage below). Well, sometime in the past year or so the dance hall was demolished to make way for underground parking. Did anybody hear about this when it happened? Why would such an important piece of heritage be destroyed? This seems to happen alot around here. Do we even have heritage laws? I'm really wondering because I know for sure that if a similar thing happened in Ottawa or other cities I've lived in there would be a big outcry and controversy (and it would probably not be allowed at all). Pretty unbelievable to me.

On a more positive note...I took a walk around the Rumley a week or two ago and it's looking pretty nice. They have really preserved the character of the building. The first floor is going to be retail and the 2nd will have a very fancy gym that will include a ton of things including alternative therapies, yoga, and a tapas bar.

That is great this building has been restored and preserved. Unfortunatley the interiors are tragic and completley clash with the exterior integrity of this buliding. I'm quite excited for when the police station begins construction. This will really be the initial push to get this area under development. Has the office building beside rumley began construction?

it is a real shame how that happened to the avenue build, i never heard of the dance hall under there before, it is a shame that it was destroyed before there were even any photos, i wonder what other hidden secrets lurk in saskatoon

Place Riel well underway

I just got an E-mail from the U of S administration about the Place Riel expansion. I can't wait to see the crane go up, it should look great next to the Health Sciences Crane...

Here's the E-mail:

"The Place Riel Renovation project is now fully underway. Extensive renovations to Upper and Lower Place Riel have started, while construction activities north of Place Riel have also begun.

The Project: Safety is Priority One
The Place Riel Student Centre Expansion/Renovation Project Steering Committee would like to reaffirm that safety is the number one priority of the Renew Place Riel project. Every measure possible has been taken to protect the safety of persons on campus and project construction personnel.

Tenant Status in Place Riel
Since the project began, some organizations and vendors have either relocated, or have permanently closed.

The USSU main office has relocated from Place Riel to room 104 on the first floor of the Memorial Union Building (MUB).

In Lower Place Riel, Bene Pizza, A&W Restaurant and the Centre Shop have all permanently closed. Extreme Pita and Jugo Juice will soon operate out of the space formerly held by A&W. The U of S Computer Store (which will eventually be relocated to the old USSU Main Office space), the Campus Cove Games Room, USSU Information Centre and Treats will remain open for the immediate future.

Travel Cuts and the Student Care Health and Dental Plan offices have relocated to Lower Sask Hall. Travel Cuts can be found in room 21, while Student Care Health and Dental Plan office can be found in room 22.

Equipment and Construction Material Trucks
A "lay-down" area (or construction supply area) on the western side of the campus Bowl has been created. This specific area is required to store construction materials required for the project. For much of the length of the project, supply trucks will be using some campus paths to transport materials to and from the lay-down area. While the supply trucks will be driving slowly on the paths, it is strongly recommended that anyone near the vehicles be aware and use caution. For additional safety, flag people will normally precede the trucks.

Construction Crane Set-Up
The crane that will service the construction of a new four-storey building addition is scheduled to be erected by early June. Anyone near the construction zone area north of Place Riel is advised to use caution during the crane installation.

Construction Noise
During the renovation project, people around the construction zone should be aware there will be a period of increased construction noise. Nearby buildings, including the Murray Library and Marquis Hall, have had their windows insulated to reduce construction noise levels. The Place Riel Renovation team appreciates everyone's understanding and patience during construction.

The committee would also like to acknowledge those who may have been, or will be, inconvenienced by construction detours, or elevated noise levels during the project. Your patience is appreciated.

Place Riel Website
For any information relating to the Place Riel Renovation project, including construction updates, detour maps, photo archives, project history, and much more, please visit www.renewplaceriel.ca or call the USSU Main Office at 966-6960."

Well, I don't know what to think! I received a River Landing ground breaking ceremony email a couple of weeks ago, saying it would take place this last Saturday. But here, no one has mentioned anything on the most talked about development in the history of modern day Saskatoon! Is it bull? Did they cave and nothing happened? I can't believe that the groundbreaking ceremony that was advertised on the net simply disappeared? Sorry, Sack'o doom. Maybe next time!? What's going on, folks?

I do not care for my tone of voice! (Can I say that? :>)

Thanks for the link, Jerry. The postponement sounds perfectly and logically based upon emotion - so why wouldn't the missing bigwigs take a couple of hours to be there if everyone's so excited and this is so huge, which IT IS?! Hmmm... Very interesting, indeed!

BTW, thanks for the neighbourhood picture tours! Has anyone ever done one on Mayfair? I remember seeing 33rd street last year and a lot of the businesses had changed or closed shop. It was really quiet, like that tour of 20th I just saw here, except for that bar/booze store on Idylwyld (sp?).

I really have mixed feelings for Saskabush, ever since they tore down the old Capitol Theatre downtown. I remember seeing 'Jaws' and 'King Kong' there. The Capitol was such an elegant beauty. Now we've got basically a strip mall under two low rise office buildings, that could have been built ANYWHERE else! I know, let it go! Progress doesn't have to be pretty. Which brings me full circle back to my last rant: River Landing rocks! Build it before your next excuse is the coming of winter!

I heard today that the Riders are opening an official 'Riders Store' in Saskatoon at the Midtown Plaza. This is long overdue in my opinion.

Sounds like the River Landing project is slowly becoming a fading memory!

With commodity prices going back up and credit markets working again, I think the project will get done, even if not by Lake Placid.

Has anyone seen this?
One more exciting development in Saskatoon, right across from the Galaxy theatre.

Does anyone want to send an email to Lake Placid? We should try to find out what is going on.

wow!! and i thought this city was booming and was better than most places in Canada. They can't even get any mid rise, high rise buildings going here. This is ridiculous!! why can't they just give it a go, at least your giving it a go.

even if they do eventually build it. It won't be that exciting for me at least bc by that time it'll be old and ill be just wanting something like a 30 story building downtown. They have really wasted a lot of time with this project and it's now becoming old.
