That depends on how the freeway is built. MTO generally uses 110-m ROW (or wider in case of cuts and fills) and occasionally as low as 90-m ROW (for grandfathered design) in the wilderness. 90 m may sound like a lot, but that’s pretty much the minimum ROW width within which to fit a 30-m median.*
With a median at least 30 m wide, most of the nature within the median is preserved in a lot of cases (such as ON-400 through Parry Sound, and ON-417 through McNabb Braeside where one can actually see Precambrian sandstone lying unconformably atop the shield rocks in the median). Of course, there are also cases where it isn’t: ON-69 south of Estaire has a massive rock cut with a grassy median because all that rock has been used to fill part of the swamp (with a culvert) for the divided 4 lanes. ON-17 near Lively used to have rock cuts in the median but the rock has since been removed due to rock fall issues.
*Technically, the divided section of ON-17 immediately east of SSM also has a 30-m median with only 80-m ROW, but that’s only because the agricultural terrain is very ideal for a narrower ROW.
