If you still want to call it the "old Bay building" nobody's gonna stop you.
The irony of this statement, is that far more Indigenous people speak English as opposed to Cree.

Most people in my circles simply call it Abinoji now. People seem to have adapted pretty quickly because of respect, signage, frequency of use, etc.

I’m guessing WehWehneh will probably take quite a bit longer to catch on because once it’s completed, most people (other than those living there or visiting it) won’t have any need to actually call the building anything.

Too many syllables and I’m out

Bishop who? As a Transit driver it's more likely to be called Route 165 than Bishop whatever. Abinoji FTW!

In the media you will always hear "X formally known as twitter" but nowadays on a traffic report they don't say "Abinojii Mikanah formally known as Bishop Grandin"

Old habits do die hard - which is fair - but the next generation won't know any different.

My step-dad still slips into "City Park" because he moved here in 1956.

I've never known Assiniboine Park as that.

My parents called it City Park when I was a kid.

The irony of your statement is that we literally beat the language out of them at residential school. Now people like you use the sad result of cultural assimilation as a justification for not using Indigenous names on buildings and street signs. sad.

My parents came here in the mid 60s and have heard them refer to it as city park.

Sorry if I missed this discussion already, but does anybody know what they are doing on the roof exactly? It looks as though the roof is being lowered by a couple feet, section by section. Is this a repair or more of a renovation? I recall there is supposed to be a rooftop space in the redevelopment.

@Rebl, if you check the Winnipeg Construction XI thread, you'll see the design concept for the renovation. It's a complete gutting. There will be residences, services and spaces for local businesses.

Cool looking design. How do you avoid the greenhouse effect and temperature stratification in a glassed-in centre atrium of this size?

The existing structural roof is a flat cast-in-place concrete slab, that is covered over with wood framing that provides the sloped surface for drainage. That's somewhat typical in older buildings as it provides a more accessible substrate for the roof membrane as repairs and replacements are required over the years.

It looks like they are removing a fair bit (maybe all?) of the existing wood framed roof structure.

For modern builds, you can put a roof membrane on top of sloped insulation that sits directly on the flat roof structure.

Ive also been wondering what they'll do with the actual roof itself. I'd assume they'll eventually remove all of the old wooden structure and replace it with something similar. That part of the building would be rather cheap to replace. The tumbsr structure itself. Maybe they'll raise the entire thing to have some type of interior space on the concrete structure. But based on that interior atrium.view, it looks like they'll just put some type of similar roof structure back on.
