Yea, the ship is still there. Many articles said that the ship would move on October 25th, but that was shot down by the SSUSC. They said they would announce the moving date at the end of October...yet here we are in the second day of November. I just hope they coordinate this like the Battleship NJ earlier this year, but the dates and locations given for the SSUS seem as unplanned and uncoordinated as the Disney Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. It seems so messy, but I really hope I can capture this beauty on the move. Can't miss history

Yes, it's cool that the ship is still here, and I got shots of it from the WWB. But shit, I've been trying to capture this historical move for well over a month. They better get this going...but even better I hope they get this thing going to Penn's Landing where I believe it belongs. But just like any major corporation, they won't listen to me! Or us

A Brooklyn concrete magnate is making a last minute effort to bring a crumbling, historic ocean liner to the Red Hook waterfront in an attempt to spare it from plans to sink it in Florida to create an artificial reef:

Sink her already. The things rich people choose to waste their money on is never surprising.

Clarify please...

I immigrated here in January, 1961. I left Rotterdam, NL and arrived in Hoboken by ocean liner. I was all of 4 years old. I still have fond memories of the journey. To me that ship is the last of her kind. Sort of like an old antique/thoroughbred race car. They literally don't make them like that anymore.

I assume you are trying to make a point here's your chance....

The historic value of the ship has been well documented. Like your own feelings on it, I am allowed my own impression of it. It's been rotting away being a symbol of decay in Philadelphia for a generation. As the warehouses and neighborhoods around it have decayed at the same time. Always with the specter of 'some rich NYer is going to save it!'. Just like America as a whole, a ship being pulled in different directions by the benevolent rich and we're just at the whim of it set to gain nothing from it.

Where you see hope, I see a decay of a past I never knew.

Interesting take.

You are correct in that you certainly have a right to your own "impression" . That's all I really wanted to know. If you feel that way, I'm sure other people do as well.

As for me, my impression goes back much further to a different time. A time post WWII when European refugees came here and assimilated (such as mysef) amongst our population. I would not have had half the opportunities afforded me here had I stayed in Europe. THAT is what that ship symbolizes to me. Freedom and opportunity....

If some rich billionaire wants to spend money on it... hey, it's not MY money. Maybe we'll even get a nice shiney new ship out of the deal. Fine with me!

Thanks for getting back.

One thing for sure is that to me this ship is not a piece of junk like the Millennium Falcon. Even if it still had its decaying paint and rust, I'd still love to see it floating somewhere else in Philly. It's a great piece of machinery...that ship is literally the fastest ship in the WORLD and it's being treated so carelessly. To be called the SS United States and be absolutely disrespected by the country bearing the same name is nuts to me. This ship should have recieved federal funding decades ago and it should already be floating somewhere else as a hotel or museum.

I even bet with the right people we could've seen the RMS Olympic today...but that was scrapped in 1935. All about money money money, and to me that is fucking disgusting

WTF

I've never encountered somebody getting depressed by the idea of something being restored. They always knew it would likely take a wealthy investor(s) with deep pockets to give this old boat a second act. It's not like this was ever going to be a government initiative with the common man clamoring for action. Truly bizarre to me to see someone rooting for the loss of such an important piece of history because they see it as some weird class issue.

depressed? weird class issue? I could care less if it's sunk or restored and was just explaining to you what a life time of seeing it has meant to me (and many other people in Philly for that matter). People can't wait to see it leave for good.

"oh cool, it's going to be an attraction for some other city's economy! Glad we let it be a giant symbol of blight and decay for Philadelphia!"

One last kick in the balls.
