I had no idea that Anthro and Urban are closing. That's a shame. I wonder if they are closing other locations in other cities too.

according to the aforementioned store manager it was polo park that terminated their lease. allegedly the mall manager said in a televised statement they're "not welcome back" too. idk what on earth could have happened behind the scenes that would result in them saying all of that.

judging by the wording of the article it seems like that entire wing is being reworked to house london drugs? i thought they were just going to merge that one side of the hall, but tommygun's was across the hall, and buildabear was quite a ways down and on the other side as well.

Also, the 7-11 press attention pisses me off. Like others said, they could have quietly closed those stores as there are likely several factors leading to their closing, but no of course they cry like babies and chuck out the crime thing as the sole excuse, making them look like innocent victims. Pathetic, if you ask me.
Ahhh, the typical Winnipegger is back. Clueless to how bad crime is in Winnipeg and the impact it's having on the city and its reputation.

And when a major Western Canadian retailer is wanting to expand in Winnipeg, you call it a kerfuffle.

I couldn't access that article but I watched this video about San Fran's downtown issues and there are some similarities to Winnipeg. The most notable one being that they too are struggling with perception problems due to sensationalist sky-is-falling news headlines. Here's the video link:

They probably don't draw the right type of customer demographics that CF Polo Park wants. CF is apparently willing to let the terminated stores move to St. Vital or Kildonan Place if they don't already have stores there.

What kind of customer do they want if they don't want the upper middle class youth who would shop at these stores? Is this maybe them starting to posture towards stores locals living on their development will need? That doesn't make sense though considering we're years from anyone thinking moving in.

Count on the pathetic New Brunswicker troll to rear it's ugly head with pure negativy towards the city, when he really doesn't give a shit about the city or citizens.

No one here gives a fuck what you think. Go and crawl back into your Atlantic Canada troll hole.

With The Bay seemingly on its last legs, I wonder if the mall was looking to close in another Anchor size tenant rather than having to scramble when the hammer drops

Jeez, what do they do with 3 floors of space if the Bay goes under? It's hard enough to fill a single storefront in a mall it seems, nevermind an entire wing.

I don't think La Maison Simons will we arriving in Winnipeg before 2027. Since they are privately held the are extra conservative with their expansion. There is bigger fish to fry than Winnipeg like the GTA and Lower Mainland.

I am planning to go to Polo Park next week. Has Hudson's Bay repaired/replaced their AC system yet? Are they open? You cannot BOPIS @ their Polo Park store. I have Hudson's Bay Rewards points to spend instore.

Man the best part of NB is leaving. That said, Dolan's is fun in Freddy. That's about it. Enjoy living in the Duchy of Irving, the most corrupt province in Canada.

I wondered whey COOP did not pick up that location as part of their purchase of Husky stations in Manitoba. Maybe because its close to their Ellice and Wall store.

Maybe an independent operator will take it over unless its time for a tank replacement which may not make monitory sense due to fuel sales

Re 7-11 it is interesting that we are barely passed them announcing closures of unprofitable locations in Winnipeg "due to theft" that we get news that Couche-Tard (Circle K, formerly Macs) has made a public takeover bid for the full chain globally. This will no doubt trigger Competition Bureau review in Canada and perhaps elsewhere such as the USA. I would also not be surprised to see divestment of additional locations in Winnipeg. It makes be wonder if Weston Foods might make a play for a big portion of locations.

--

In terms of CF v Anthro and Urban Outfitters, locally I wonder if those locations are perhaps attracting the same people that have seen crime rise in general in Polo Park. I know the mall is so heavily security cameraed they can trace back after an incident and follow people the whole time they are in the public spaces of the mall and likely the shared back room halls and such. The other piece though is to publicly be saying they aren't welcome back in Polo is likely saying they are not welcome in ANY CF property. I am not sure what exactly is behind this but that it has gotten to public statements is a pretty major rift.

RE Ne'er-do-wells, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters aren't the stores they'd be hitting imo. Those are stores for teenage to mid twenties girls, not thugs trying to catch a devious lick. Something tells me this is purely the local exec getting an offer from London Drugs for some serious clams and they don't have the foresight to see the closure of two attraction stores in the long run.
