Soccer in Canada | Canada Hosting the 2026 World Cup

Riding off the excitement of the WWC, there has been some discussion of having a thread dedicated to Canada's national soccer teams. A thread on the main board will be great to drum up awareness and support of our National Soccer Teams.

For anyone interested in a Forum dedicated solely to Canadian soccer, please visit The Voyagers Forum at http://www.thevoyageurs.org/index.php?/index

Here is the 2015 national team schedule. Mens, women, and youth teams (20, u23 olympic). Courtesy of "ironcub14" on the Voyageurs board.

So the Impact U18 was playing its quarterfinal game at Saputo and was watching parts of the game on stream (in which they won 3-1).

How it is relevant to this thread you may ask? While watching the game, I was blown away by #12 so went online to see who it was. Turns out it is Jean-Yves Ballou Tabla, youngest player on the team at 16.

He was named Canadian U17 player in 2014 at the age of 15.

The kid has the potential to be the star of the Canadian team and he plays midfield, the most important position. Now I know why the Impact's U18 academy has a 22-2-2 record!

It's always good to recognize potential talent early but we tend to get a little carried away with future pronouncements.

I used to maintain the Canadians Abroad list many years ago (before MLS) when most of our potential young talent was outsourced to Europe. I can't tell you how many young men who were trialling or even playing in the system of many high profile European clubs have gone by the wayside, hundreds. They were "household names" amongst the Voyageurs (NT fan club) for a short time and then disappeared into obscurity.

So its good to be positive and recognize talent but let's also temper it with some reality, there's a long road ahead for these young players.

Haha I know, this is why I said the potential is there. Whether or not it happens remains to be seen.

He's already with the U18 national team at the age of 16 and was named MVP of a tournament they played back in Slovakia back in April. It's not out of question we see him with the national team in 2-3 years.

I've never been a fan of the official jersey. I just find it too.....plain, if that makes any sense.

With that said, I'll still probably buy one.

They usually redo the jersey every 2 years. One of the reasons they look plain is because a lot of ppl dont get a name and number put on it.

A couple years ago umbro made the jersey with a black chevron. Really something unique.

This thread shows the history of the kits.

I'm really digging the 97/98 kits. They're beautiful and different.

Agreed, it's fugly. Our national colours are so nice, they could have done something more inspired and stylish.

Canada to focus on Olympic development at 2015 Pan Am Games
canadasoccer.com 11 May 2015

As Canada’s Men’s and Women’s National Teams each face daunting summer challenges, another set of up-and-coming players will be just as busy as they take part in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

In the women’s competition, Canada will field an Olympic Developmental U-18/U-23 squad. The group will look to gain experience in international competitions as they look to make the transition into more prominent roles at the senior level with the 2016 Olympic Games approaching and more tournaments like the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 on the horizon.

Coached by Canada’s Women’s EXCEL Program U-18/U-23 Director Danny Worthington, the team will play out of Group B with three other countries that will participate in this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

They’ll open with a game against Ecuador on Saturday 11 July before further games against Costa Rica (15 July) and Brazil (19 July) as they look to defend the Gold Medal that was won four years ago at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, MEX.

On the men’s side, the Pan American competition is an Olympic Developmental U-22 event and will be a valuable chance for the team to prepare for qualifying for the 2016 Olympics, which should get underway in the fall.

As the tournament runs concurrently with the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the final selection for the Pan American Games will be made based on remaining available players that can also be released from their professional environments.

With Men’s National Team Head Coach Benito Floro otherwise occupied in what will hopefully be a fruitful CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament, assistant coach Antonio Floro will be at the helm of the Pan American Games team so that a similar training structure and tactical environment with the senior team is maintained.

Canada will open Group A play with a mouthwatering fixture against Brazil on Sunday 12 July. Next up will be a game against CONCACAF rivals Panama (16 July) before they wrap up the round robin with a game against Peru (20 July).

The last time Canada took part in a men’s tournament in the Pan American Games was when Canada last hosted the event in Winnipeg in 1999. They finished just outside the medals in fourth after a close 1:2 loss to the United States in the Bronze Medal Game.

That tournament launched the careers of many future Men’s National Team players like Dwayne De Rosario, Patrice Bernier, and Lars Hirschfeld.

All soccer matches will be played at Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton, ON. It will be renamed the CIBC Hamilton Pan Am Soccer Stadium for the duration of the event.

Canada’s final player selection for both Men’s and Women’s competitions is expected to be submitted and announced in early June.

Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games schedule is available at http://www.toronto2015.org/0/football-soccer-schedule.

Canadian men's team nominated for TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games
Men's U-23 Team (Olympic) canadasoccer.com 19 June 2015

On Friday, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canada Soccer announced the soccer athletes who have been nominated to represent Canada in the men’s and women’s tournament at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games from 10 to 26 July this summer.

Canada’s lineup of 18 players features a number of quality young professionals that are just making their first steps into the world of professional soccer, with many of them already having played a few games at the senior level for Canada’s National Team.

The team will be making their first appearance at the Pan American Games since 1999 when they finished in fourth place at the tournament in Winnipeg. That tournament helped start the career of Dwayne De Rosario, the man who went onto become the record goal scorer for the Canadian Men’s National Team and is now a TORONTO 2015 Ambassador.

The team opens competition at the CIBC Hamilton Soccer Stadium on 12 July against world powerhouses Brazil before wrapping up play in Group A with games against Panama (16 July) and Peru (20 July).

The Pan American competition is an Olympic Developmental U-22 event and will be a valuable chance for the team (#canM23) to prepare for qualifying for the 2016 Olympics, which should get underway in the fall. All of the players on this Canadian team are professional players with the majority coming from Canada’s professional clubs.

The top two teams in both of the groups containing four teams will qualify for the medal rounds with the Gold Medal Game taking place on 26 July.

“I’m happy with our squad because I know the majority of the players. We know how they can work with us and develop. I hope that we can reach the semi-finals and we are really excited for that first game against Brazil because it’s a really important game for us.” Antonio Floro, Head Coach, Canada’s Men’s (M-23) Team.

Frustrating first half against El Salvador. Larin misses an open net, Ricketts fails to pass, and the goalie bails us out so it's not 2-0 Salvador at half. They're the weakest team in this group and Canada's struggling. I don't think i've ever seen a defence and midfield melt away under pressure in their own box like Canada's has so far tonight.

Yeah, we're bad. Larin's miss is worth a

This game shows our 109th FIFA ranking is not that wrong after all. 89th ranked El Salvador has had the better chances.
