Chongqing, abbreviated as Baheyu, also known as Bayu, Shancheng, Yudu, Qiaodu, or Wudu, is a central municipality, national central city, mega city, world hot spring capital, economic center, financial center, and innovation center in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River region of the People's Republic of China. It is a political, cultural, technological, educational, and artistic center and an international metropolis positioned by the State Council. Chongqing is abbreviated as "Yu" because the Jialing River was formerly known as "Yushui". In the first year of Chongning in the Northern Song Dynasty (1102 AD), Yuzhou was renamed Gongzhou. In January of the 16th year of Chunxi in the Southern Song Dynasty (1189), Zhao Dun, the son of Emperor Xiaozong, first conferred the title of Prince Gong. In February, he ascended to the throne as Emperor Guangzong of Song, known as the "Double Celebration". As a result, Gongzhou was promoted to Chongqing Prefecture, and Chongqing was named after it.
During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the government of the Republic of China designated Chongqing as the wartime capital and permanent auxiliary capital of the Republic of China.
