Ekibastuz is a town in Pavlodar oblysy (region). The town is infamous for being the location on a major concentration camp maintained by the Soviet Union from the 1920's to the 1950's.
Today, Ekibastuz is one of the prime energy-producing cities in Central Asia. Near Ekibastuz, there are two large coal-fired power plants, Ekibastuz GRES-1 with a generation capacity of 4000 MW and Ekibastuz GRES-2 with a generation capacity of 1000 MW. Latter power plant has a 419.7 metres tall smokestack, which is the tallest chimney in the world.
Ekibastuz is also the startpoint of two powerlines designed for 1150 kV. The first runs over Kokshetau and Kostanay to Chelyabinsk and the second over Barnaul to Sharypovo. However only the section from Ekibastuz to Kokshetau was ever operated with 1150 kV.
The other sections were never operated with this voltage and used as 500 kV lines. Since 1991 also the section between Ekibastuz and Kokshetau uses 500 kV.
