Brandenburg an der Havel is a independent city (Kreisfreie Städte) west of Berlin near the state's border with Saxony-Anhalt. The city is situated on the River Havel.
Though overshadowed by the very large Berlin, it is a very historic town in its own right, once the center of the medieval Bishopric of Brandenburg, and the principality of Brandenburg, all of which gave the current states its name, culture, and history.
