Bergen, whose name also includes the district in which it is located because of other towns of the same name, is a municipality and town located on the Lüneburger Heide (Heath).
The town is home to a NATO base, and the Sieben Steinhäuser, a cluster of dolmens dating from the Stone Age. During World War II, the large Bergen-Belsen was located just southwest of the municipality.
