Xinxiang, also known as Muye, is a prefecture level city in Henan Province. Xinxiang County was established in the sixth year of the Kaihuang reign of the Sui Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was known as Weihui Prefecture in Henan Province. In the early Republic of China, the prefecture was abolished and replaced by a county. Established as the capital of Pingyuan Province in May 1949. In November 1952, Pingyuan Province was abolished and Xinxiang was placed under the direct jurisdiction of Henan Province, with the establishment of Xinxiang Special Zone, which was later renamed Xinxiang Region.
