Xuancheng City, referred to as "Xuanzhou" in ancient times, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. It is located in the southeast of Anhui Province, on the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, east of Hangzhou and Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, north of Ma'anshan City and Nanjing, Changzhou and Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, west of Chizhou City and Wuhu City, and south of Mount Huangshan City. It is located in the combination zone of Wannan Mountain District and the plain along the river. It is a subtropical humid monsoon climate with four distinct seasons and abundant rainfall ,with a total area of 12340 square kilometers. As of March 2024, Xuancheng City governs one district, four counties, and manages two county-level cities. As of the end of 2024, the permanent population of Xuancheng City was 2.49 million.
Xuancheng City is a thousand year old prefecture, adjacent to Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, and close to Shanghai and Hangzhou. It was formerly under the jurisdiction of Wu and Yue. In the second year of the Yuanfeng reign of the Western Han Dynasty (109 BC), Danyang Commandery was established here, which has been the capital of commanderies, states, and prefectures throughout history, including Xuancheng Commandery, Xuanzhou, and Ningguo Prefecture. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xuancheng Special Zone was established, which later merged into Wuhu Special Zone and Wuhu Region. In 1980, Wuhu Region was renamed Xuancheng Region. In April 1982, the Xuancheng District Committee and Administrative Office relocated from Wuhu to Xuancheng. In 2000, Xuancheng withdrew its land and established itself as a city. Xuancheng is a national garden city, a national forest city, a cultural and green town linkage zone in southern Anhui, a city in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta, a provincial historical and cultural city, a world-class leisure, vacation, health and tourism destination in Mount Huangshan Mountain. Xuancheng is an important comprehensive transportation hub in southern Anhui, and the only Chinese city with four treasures of study. Xuan paper production skills have been included in the United Nations intangible cultural heritage list. Xuancheng City is dominated by industries such as electronic information and automotive parts, textiles and clothing, food and beverages, and new energy.
By 2025, Xuancheng City will achieve a regional gross domestic product of 214.86 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6% at constant prices.
