Carlisle was once home to the Indian Industrial School. Later it became the Carlisle Barracks, designated the oldest U.S. Army post in the nation. Today is serves as the U.S. Army War College.

Carlisle is home to Dickinson College, and the separately run Penn State Dickinson School of Law. Both are two of the oldest institutions in the nation.
