Guangyuan, formerly known as Lizhou, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province. It is located in the northern part of Sichuan Province, bordering Gansu Province and Shaanxi Province to the north, Nanchong City to the south, Mianyang City to the west, and Bazhong City to the east. By 2022, Guangyuan has 4 counties, 3 districts, 23 townships, 112 towns and 7 streets under its jurisdiction, with a registered residence population of 2.9308 million people and an area of 16319 square kilometers. Guangyuan belongs to the subtropical humid monsoon climate, with over 30 proven mineral resources available for industrial use and abundant natural gas resources. In 2022, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Guangyuan City was 113.978 billion yuan. In 2021, it was rated as one of the top 100 brands in China's prefecture level cities.

As of the end of 2022, Guangyuan City has one provincial-level key laboratory, one provincial-level engineering technology research center, one provincial-level new research and development institution, nine municipal level key laboratories, and 66 municipal level engineering technology research centers. Guangyuan City has a total of 706 schools of all levels and types (excluding village and primary school teaching points), including 5 universities, 11 secondary vocational education schools, 24 ordinary high schools, 114 ordinary junior high schools, 254 primary schools, 292 kindergartens, 5 special education schools, and 1 work study school. Guangyuan City has 2736 medical and health institutions at all levels and types (including village clinics), including 137 township health centers, 22 community health service centers (stations), and 1724 village clinics.

Guangyuan is an ancient city with a history of over 4000 years. The rulers of the Yuan Dynasty changed the name of Lizhou to Guangyuan in order to demonstrate their "Dewei Broadcasting and vast territory". This name has been used ever since. After the founding of New China, in March 1950, the Jiange Commissioner's Office was established in the old urban area of Guangyuan. In December 1952, it was renamed Guangyuan Special Zone. In March 1953, it was under the jurisdiction of Mianyang Special Zone. In February 1985, Guangyuan was abolished from a county and established as a city. The main attractions in the area include Jianmen Pass, Jialing River, Bailong Lake, Tingzi Lake, etc
