Wuhan, abbreviated as "Han" or "Jiangcheng", is the capital of Hubei Province, the largest city in central China and the only sub provincial city. It is also the busiest city in inland China and the regional center city of the People's Republic of China. As early as the Neolithic Age 6000 years ago, our ancestors had already multiplied and thrived here. The Panlong City ruins in the northern suburbs serve as the beginning of Wuhan's city construction, with a history of 3500 years. During the Republic of China period, Hankou was highly prosperous and known as the Chicago of the East. The comprehensive strength of the three towns in Wuhan was once second only to Shanghai, ranking among the top in Asia.
Wuhan is located in the eastern part of the Jianghan Plain. The world's third largest river, the Yangtze River, and its largest tributary, the Han River, cross the central part of the city, dividing the Wuhan urban area into three parts, forming a pattern of Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang towns standing across the river. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai once wrote here, 'Playing the jade flute in the Yellow Crane Tower, plum blossoms falling in May in the river city.' Therefore, Wuhan has been known as the river city since ancient times. The city currently has 13 urban areas and 3 national level development zones, covering an area of 8467 square kilometers. The area is crisscrossed by rivers, lakes, and ports, with hundreds of mountains and 166 lakes located among them. The water area accounts for one fourth of the city's total area, forming a unique ecological environment of riverside and lakeside water.
Wuhan is an important research and education base in China. As of 2014, there were 98 higher education institutions in China; Among them, the number of ordinary universities and undergraduate institutions ranks second only to Beijing in China, and the number of key universities directly under the Ministry of Education ranks third in the country. The total number of college and graduate students is 1.0726 million, ranking first in the world
