Description
Architect: Orlando Metcalfe Poe

- Originally, a 32-foot lighthouse was constructed at this site, but it was designed and constructed so poorly that it was toppled in a storm in November of 1928.

- The United State Congress acted quickly upon hearing of the tower's destruction, and appropriated $8,000 for the construction of a new and improved light station that stood 74 feet in height.

- As the shipping industry grew on the Great Lakes, it was determined that the lighthouses need to be upgraded, and in 1861, the government increased the height of the tower to its current height.
