Description
* It allowed first a direct radio relay link from former West Germany to former West Berlin without using any infrastructure of GDR. The terminal in former West Berlin was Sendemast Berlin - Frohnau ( http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=8946 ). Before its erection the only direct radio relay links between West Germany and former West Berlin were over horizon radio relay links, which sometimes do not work properly as result of bad wave propagation conditions. It is guyed in four levels ( 60 m, 132 m, 216 m and 312 m over ground). For the upper guy level, double guys are used.

* The mast has several closed operating rooms and an elevator for six people.

* Since 1989 the mast is used for meteorological research by the Institute for Steel Research of Braunschweig Technical University. It carries several devices for wind speed and wind direction measurements fixed on 7.5 metres long horizonal bars. The vertical distance between these bars is 18 meters. The lowest bar with wind measuring equipment is 30 metres, the upmost 341 metres above ground. Further the mast carries several measurement equipment for measuring wind forces on its structure, for better understanding the influence of wind on guyed masts. .

* After 1990 the mast overtook all radio services, which were installed on Sendemast Gartow 1 ( http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=46673 ) and were not cancelled. It is also used for broadcasting the program of “Deutschlandfunk” on 102.1 MHz.
