Description • In 1963, the Milton S. Hershey Foundation offered a $50 million to the Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school in Hershey. With this grant and $21.3 million from the U.S. Public Health Service, the University established a medical school that opened its doors for the first class of students in 1967; the hospital began treating patients in 1970.
• Penn State Hershey Medical Center complex includes the 468-bed medical center, a children's hospital, a physician's center, and various research institutes. Today, Penn State Hershey Medical Center stands out as one of seven academic health centers in Pennsylvania and the sole academic health center in the state located outside the urban hubs of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The hospital serves more than 1.6 million people living in Central Pennsylvania.
