Description • The dam, which axis is 2,309 meters, the longest in the world, is equipped with a series of canal locks to allow ships to pass it.
• Construction of the dam required the flooding of populated areas, which meant relocation of former residents as well as construction of new cities above the old ones that were scheduled for flooding.
• The project has steamed ahead with the backing of the communist leadership despite objections of environmental and social impact. Is construction of the 607-foot high, 1.4-mile long dam, across the Yangtze River, does not fully complete the hugely controversial Three Gorges Dam project.
• Cost: $22 billion.
• Turbines: 26 generators.
• Construction Timeline:
- The first part of construction involved building a diversion channel and set of temporary ship locks.
- The second part consisted of construction of the bottom 87 meters of the main dam. With most of the main dam itself complete, the first stage of the filling of the reservoir began in June 2003. Construction of the electricity generating turbines and a series of ship locks is the next step.
- The final phase raised the height of the dam to 175 meters and also added more turbines.
