Description
Hillbrow Tower in the tallest freestanding structure in Africa, with the exception of chimneys

The restaurant and observation deck at the top of the Hillbrow Tower were closed to visitors in 1981, due to security concerns

When it was being constructed, work took place 6 days a week, 24 hours a day, giving many local residents headaches

The bottom 178 metres of the tour was made using a ongoing pour at 18cm (or 1 and 1/2 feet)per hour

The make sure the tower was perfectly vertical, a laser beam was used for guidance as the tower was being constructed

The walls of the Tower vary in thickness, they are 84 CM thick at ground level and 38 CM thick at the top

The Tower belongs to telecommunications company Telkom

The Towers original name was the JG Strijdom Tower after a former South African prime minister (1954 to 1958)

Before it was closed ,the public observation deck accomodated up to 200 people

A 360 degree of the city is visible through 24 windows on the observation deck

Construction Costs were 200,000 US Dollars
