- The Brutalist-styled building replaces an Italianate-styled classic opera house completed on the site in November 1890. A major fire gutted the historic opera house in 1977, leaving it destroyed and abandoned.

- The current opera house began construction on the site of the old one in 1980, but suffered many delays and stoppages. It was not fully completed until 1999.
