Schneeberg is a former mining town founded in 1471. First there was silver mining, then cobalt and bismuth mining.
As the rocks contain greater concentrations of uranium, which was mined from 1946 to 1956, many miners died of lung cancer caused by the inhalation of radon, a decay product of uranium. As lung cancer was unknown to doctors in earlier days, it was described as "disease of Schneeberg".
